DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The curator of mammals will work to conduct & publish competent &
original research of significance, serve as a principal curator of the
mammal collection, & provide expertise in mammal identification,
distribution, & mammal biology to other sections of the NC State Museum
of Natural Sciences. In addition, this curator will interface w/the
general public, private & public organizations to provide expertise &
guidance w/respect to issues involving the state's resident mammal
species. This curator will also work w/members of the Education,
Exhibits, & External Affairs sections of the museum to provide
appropriate scientific information. A significant portion of this
position will be devoted to the development of exhibits & programs
regarding current research on mammals & development of programs to
promote tourism through mammal-related activities (mammal watching
trails, "hotspots" & organized tours) for the state of North Carolina.
This curator will enjoy working w/the public & will function well in a
team setting.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of zoology n general and mammalogy specifically.
Considerable knowledge of requirements for scientific research &
publications, of the principles & practices of scientific research, & of
taxonomic principles. Good working knowledge of materials & equipment
used in scientific research; considerable knowledge of mammals; & a
general knowledge of the natural history of North Carolina. Ability to
solve advanced & complex problems of taxonomic identification; ability
to plan, design & conduct original research in areas of natural science;
& ability to compile & record results in accepted scientific formats.
Also, the ability to converse & present lectures on topics in areas of
expertise to professionals and laymen. Good public relations skills.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a master's degree in biology, zoology, or a science
curriculum related to area of expertise and three years of experience in
specialty area; or an equivalent combination of education and
experience.
