Collections Manager, Marine Invertebrates, Wellington
NIWA is a leading environmental research institute and key provider of marine,
freshwater, and atmospheric research in New Zealand. We are seeking a science
graduate to join our collection management team-part of the Biodiversity and
Biosecurity group-which manages an important national collection of marine
invertebrates from the New Zealand region, tropical Pacific, and Ross Sea.
You will have responsibility for contributing to NIWA's marine biodiversity
programs, including the management of the NIWA Biology collection, maintaining
and developing it in accordance with modern museum practices. Routine duties
will include specimen data entry, accessions, registration, and processing
specimen loans. Other duties will include conducting collections-based
research, attending to research and laboratory needs of visiting scientists,
participating in collection-oriented field research and commercial contract
work.
The minimum qualification is a zoological PhD or equivalent. Museum or large-
collection management experience is essential, together with knowledge of
collection and preservation techniques for marine organisms. Knowledge of
marine invertebrate diversity is essential. Experience in specimen data
management is also desirable.
Applicants must respond to the selection criteria found in the attached job
description.
In general, your application will be assessed and rated in relation to how
well you meet the selection criteria. It is essential that you provide a
written response to each of the selection criteria that clearly and concisely
demonstrates your ability and experience in relation to each one. You may wish
to provide examples in support of your responses, but you should avoid
'padding' your application with irrelevant information.
Please include your response to the selection criteria as part of your
covering letter
Applications close 5pm Friday 14 October, 2005.
