This requisition will remain open until filled.
Job Description:  Provide general collections data assistance to senior
collections staff and herbaria researchers. In particular, assist with
cryptogamic and vascular plant curation.

Responsibilities:

50% Cryptogamic Curation (mosses, algae, etc., under the direction of the
Bryophyte and Algae Curator): Transfers specimens into new cabinets and
assists with ongoing curatorial reorganization. Using appropriate
equipment (e.g., refrigerator dolly), assists with the physical moving of
herbarium cabinets (possibly weighing up to 600 lbs.), and other large
objects. Using existing software, prepares labels for new acquisitions and
enters data into curatorial database. Inserts new acquisitions into
cryptogamic collections.
Folds paper into bryophyte packets. Assists with other aspects of general
cryptogam curation as needed.

25% Collections Data Assistance (under the direction of the Manager of
Data Collections): Performs routine data entry for the accessioning of new
acquisitions and the retroactive data capture of existing specimens.
Performs routine data entry of transaction records. Routine clerical
filing of transaction papaerwork. Using existing software, prepares labels
for new acquisitions.

25% Vascular Plant Curation (with priority given to material from
California or otherwise addressing the Jepson Herbarium mandate, under the
direction of the Manager of Vascular Plants): Inserts new acquisitions
into vascular plant collection, using accepted cross-references and making
new labeled folders after confirming that such are needed, referring
problematic cases to more experienced curatorial staff. Assists with
specimen preparation and mounting. Performs other routine curatorial tasks
and assists with general vascular plant curation as needed.

Requirements & Qualifications:
Required: Basic computer skills in Word and Excel. Skilled in making
computer generated specimen labels with a high degree of accuracy,  proven
data entry skills. Ability to clearly understand and follow instructions
in spoken and written English.  Ability to perform routine tasks for
extended periods of time with minimal error rate.  Exceptional manual
dexterity.  Ability to handle archival material with care.  Superior
attention to detail.  Physical ability to repetitively lift light objects
to 6' height (using a step stool if needed).

Desired: Prior experience with cryptogamic curation.

Other:  This is a career position with an end date of January 2008.
Employment beyond December 2007 is contingent upon funding.
