NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM,  LONDON
Department of Botany 

The NHM is inviting applications for the following posts:: 
1. Collections Manager (Team Leader  - Flowering Plants)
2. Herbarium Technician  (6 months Temporary)  
3. Herbarium Technician  (2 year Fixed Term )  
4. Deputy Laboratory Manager (3 year Fixed Term)

1. Collections Manager (Team Leader  - Flowering Plants)

Salary Range: £27,500 to £35,000
We are seeking to appoint an experienced person to manage the Museum's flowering plant herbaria.  You will lead the team of flowering plant curators and support staff, co-ordinate collections activities, contribute to policy development, and take part in the day to day running of the herbaria. 

You should be an innovative and dynamic person with strong interpersonal and negotiating skills.  You must have a degree in a natural history related subject or equivalent experience, a minimum of 3 years experience in natural sciences collections management (ideally including people and project management), a clear understanding of developments in the digitization and electronic dissemination of biological collections information, and a demonstrable knowledge of and interest in botany.

2. Herbarium Technician  (6 months temporary)

Annual Salary Range: £16,650 to £20,000 (pro rata) 
6 month temporary appointment  (Optional part-time working available)
We are seeking to appoint a Herbarium Technician to provide partial cover for a staff member  
seconded to another department.   Your main responsibilities will be assisting with the curation of the Non-European flowering plant collections including incorporating specimens into the collections, preparing loans for despatch and assisting scientific visitors to the collections. Other tasks will include data entry and scanning of specimens, and mounting specimens on paper sheets for incorporation.

You should have good written and verbal communication skills and experience of the handling and accurate filing of documents, museum collections or similar items. You should be manually dextrous, be able to work with care and attention to detail and be familiar with basic spreadsheet and database packages. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or in a team are essential, as is an ability to learn new tasks quickly.

3. Herbarium Technician  (2 Year FTA)

Salary Range:  £16,650 to £20,000  
We are seeking to appoint a Herbarium Technician to assist in the curation and restructuring of the British and European plant collections including incorporating specimens into the collections, preparing loans for despatch, and assisting scientific visitors to the collections. Other tasks will include data entry and scanning of specimens, and mounting specimens on paper sheets for incorporation.

You should have good written and verbal communication skills and experience of the handling and accurate filing of documents, museum collections or similar items. You should be manually dextrous, be able to work with care and attention to detail and be familiar with basic spreadsheet and database packages. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or in a team are essential, as is a strong and demonstrable interest in natural history.

Deputy Laboratory Manager ( 3 Year FTA (with possible extension).

Salary Range:  £21,988 to £28,500  

The Department of Botany at The Natural History Museum is seeking to appoint a Deputy Laboratory Manager whose primary role will be to assist in the provision of resource, training and technical expertise for maintaining the operation of the Botany Department's range of research laboratory facilities. 

You should be a good communicator with strong interpersonal skills able to work independently or as part of a team and with painstaking attention to detail.  You must have a degree in a natural history related subject or equivalent experience, furthermore you must have an HNC in Applied Biology or a degree with an applied laboratory component or equivalent experience.  You must have experience of working in a laboratory environment (ideally 2-3 years), be familiar with the operation of a wide range of biological laboratory equipment, and have knowledge of relevant Health & Safety procedures and their application in laboratories. You should have experience of data entry and retrieval, and phylogenetic and population-genetics analysis, software packages and underlying theories.  You should have a strong and demonstrable interest in collections-based natural history.
