Research and Educational Anthropologist
Buffalo Museum of Science
We are looking for a full-time anthropologist with research and
educational experience to support the growth of educational programming
opportunities at the Buffalo Museum of Science and oversee curation of
the many facets of the museum's anthropological collections. The
position is best suited for individuals who enjoy communicating science,
have a passion for the process of science learning, and are able to
facilitate learning, particularly in the area of anthropology, the
principles of inquiry, scientific exploration, and research excitement
for people of all ages.
The anthropologist will be responsible for maintaining an
anthropological/archaeological research program relevant to the Western
New York region, and working closely with the Center for Science
Learning department to develop and facilitate new and existing
educational programs. Scientific research provides an authentic
component for the public experience of science at the museum.
The museum supports a diverse anthropological collection of local
archeological significance as well as ethnographic and archeological
materials from around the world. Further information on museum science,

Position Priorities
* Develop anthropological content for new and existing
educational programs under the direction of the Center for Science
Learning
* Provide anthropological and other scientific skills in museum
programs such as Discovery Camps
* Maintain the anthropological collections
* Develop partnerships with regional institutions with
opportunities for internships and other educational opportunities
* Develop research and collections grants
* Maintain a research program
General responsibilities
* Educational programming, development and grant preparation will
comprise about 60% of the position.
* Care and curation of anthropology collection, coordinate and
supervise volunteer staff, maintain the Anthropology web site and
database (Microsoft Access).
* Create displays for rotating and semi-permanent exhibits, such
as "Anthropology All Around."
* Collaborate with staff on Museum-wide projects and programs.
* Participate in task force teams as directed and contribute to
development of the museum's Strategic Concept.
Qualifications and skills
* MS or PhD in an appropriate field
* Demonstrated ability to conduct outdoor fieldwork
* IT skills, including GIS technology, desirable
* Interest and ability to collaborate with colleagues in a team
environment
* Experience with or ability to instruct pre-college audiences
* Experience in curation of anthropological collections
* Grant application experience desirable
The successful candidate will:
* Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Work well with others, as outlined in supporting references
* Subscribe to all AAM and other professional ethical guidelines
Salary and benefits: About $30,000, depending on qualifications and
experience
