Position Description: Director of Collections
The Director of Collections has primary responsibility for the physical
and intellectual control and interpretation of all collections in the
Museum’s trust, including accessioned objects, objects in the Museum’s
temporary custody, loans to the Museum, and loans from the Museum. In
collaboration with other staff, the Director of Collections insures
appropriate use and interpretation of collections in exhibits and
programs.
Specifically, the Director of Collections:
• bears responsibility for the application of institutional collections
management policies, plans, and practices, including, but not limited
to: accession and deaccession, registration and documentation,
cataloguing, preservation, conservation, access, risk management,
storage, handling, and inventory;
• has primary responsibility for data standards and systems for the
input, maintenance, and preservation of collections records;
• provides professional direction to all other staff in the use of the
Museum’s collections for exhibits, education, research, and public
information;
• engages consulting conservators, curators, researchers, and other
collections specialists as needed to advance the preservation,
interpretation, and cataloguing of the collections, as resources are
available;
• organizes, supervises, and evaluates the work of collections
department staff and volunteers;
• represents the requirements of collections stewardship to management,
to institutional planning, policies, and procedures, and to the Board
of Trustees;
• in collaboration with other departments, obtains funds and other
forms of support for stewardship, development, and interpretation of
the collections; promotes the importance of collections held in the
public’s trust; coordinates the deployment of Museum resources in a
manner that recognizes and balances the many needs of the Museum and
its audiences;
• drafts, implements, and monitors policies and budgets for the
Collections Department;
• serves on the Museum’s management team and provides staff support to
the Board’s Mission Committee.
The Director of Collections at the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium
should possess the following minimum qualifications:
1) A masters degree or equivalent training and/or experience in the
management of diverse museum collections, emphasizing but not limited
to vertebrate natural history collections;
2) Experience in the application of best practices in the management of
museums, their collections, and their interpretive programs and
exhibits;
3) Leadership, management, and supervisory experience in museum
settings, with an emphasis on teamwork, collaboration, flexibility,
respect, and attention to high standards;
4) Excellent writing, speaking, and electronic communication skills;
5) An established professional network of peers and colleagues in the
museum field.
