COLLECTION MANAGER IN ORNITHOLOGY

Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History

            The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History is soliciting applications for a position of Collection Manager in Ornithology.  The museum has a state-of-the art facility, with a large research and collections staff covering various disciplines in natural history.  The Department of Ornithology includes a Curator of Birds in addition to graduate and undergraduate students, volunteers, and research associates.  It has well-equipped preparation, laboratory, and collection facilities.
            The Collection Manager in Ornithology, working under the supervision of the Curator of Birds, will assume responsibility for managing a collection of 27,000 specimens, including skins, skeletons, eggs, nests, and other components.  The person selected also is expected to work closely with individuals overseeing a tissue collection.  Representative duties include specimen conservation, maintaining computerized records and archives, field work, specimen acquisition and preparation, managing loans, answering queries, maintaining research equipment, interacting with the public, and assisting in education and exhibits.  Individual will also carry out other duties as assigned by the Curator of Birds.
            Preference will be given to candidates with experience and background in ornithology, collection care, and computerized data management.  Experience in a tissue collection is desirable.  Required is a bachelor's degree in Zoology or Biology, or equivalent combination of education/job-related experience.  It is expected that the individual selected will have demonstrated knowledge of acceptable museum practices and standards for collection care, management, documentation, conservation, and registration.  We are seeking a person willing to exercise initiative in bringing forward new projects to enhance the research and educational utility of the bird collection.  Salary begins at $28,000 per year, with full university benefits.
