CONSERVATOR I, Assistant Objects Conservator

PEABODY MUSEUM, YALE

 

General Purpose

Undertake the conservation treatment of archaeological and ethnographic
collections being moved to an off-site collections facility. Also provide
conservation advice on and assist with the packing and transport of
collections. Reports to the Project Registrar and Senior Conservator.

 

Essential Duties

1.	Carry out conservation treatment on archaeological and ethnographic
objects requiring it prior to being moved. 
2.	Consult with project staff on proper cleaning, handling and moving
procedures for the collections, archives and library materials involved in
the move. 
3.	Consult with project staff on appropriate packing materials and
techniques. Possibly undertake the packing of objects requiring special
attention, such as extremely fragile or broken ones. 
4.	Assist in the preparation of the off-site collections facility.
Provide conservation input on appropriate storage systems and conditions. 
5.	Assist in the physical move of the Anthropology collections,
archives and library materials to the off-site collections facility. 

 

Education and Training

1.	Masters degree from a recognized conservation program or its
equivalent. 
2.	PREFERRED: 2 years experience working with archaeological and
ethnographic materials. Experience with a similar move project. 

 

Skills and Abilities

1.	General knowledge of museum organizational structures and
administrative procedures. 
2.	Knowledge edge of chemistry and ethnography 
3.	Knowledge of conservation principles, techniques, and procedures. 
4.	Knowledge of archaeological and ethnographic materials and
techniques and of the chemical interactions of such materials with each
other and with the environment. 
5.	Knowledge of hazardous materials and chemical safety. 
6.	Manual dexterity, visual acuity, and artistic skills.
Organizational, research, oral and written communication, analytical, and
teaching skills. 
7.	Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively
with a team. 
8.	Experience with computerized databases, Excel, and other computer
software. 

 

 

 

MUSEUM ASSISTANT I

PEABODY MUSEUM

 

General Purpose

Assist with the cataloging, inventory, cleaning, packing, and moving of
archaeological and ethnographic collections to an off-site collections
facility.  Reports to the Project Registrar and Collections Manager for
Anthropology

 

Essential Duties

1.                   Carry out cataloging and inventory of archeological and
ethnographic artifacts, including updating storage locations, using Peabody
database (KE EMu) and following established divisional guidelines and museum
standards. 

2.                   Carry out barcoding of objects and locations.

3.                   Clean artifacts using standard preservation and
conservation techniques.

4.                   Carry out packing of collections to ensure safe
transport.

5.                   Assist in the physical move of the Anthropology
collections, archives and library to an off-site collections facility.

6.                   Assist in preparing, sorting and identifying specimens
for use and storage including identification of artifacts; preparation of
specimens, trays and labels; and placement of specimens in proper location
within the collection.

7.                   Carry out curatorial activities to maintain the order
of the collection and to ensure the care and proper handling of collection
material.

8.                   Monitor activities of volunteers and students, and
provide training when necessary.

9.                   Perform clerical functions incidental to curatorial
activities.

 

Education and Training

1.                   Six years of related work experience, four of them in
the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level
education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate degree;
or little or no work experience and Bachelor's degree in a related field; or
an equivalent combination of experience and education.

2.                   PREFERRED: Two years experience in museum collections
management activities, experience in artifact care and packing of objects.
Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Natural Sciences, Art or related field.

 

Skills and Abilities

1.                   Experience with computerized databases, Excel, and
other computer software. 

PREFERRED: KE EMu

2.                   Knowledge and experience working with a variety of
anthropological artifacts.

3.                   Meticulous attention to detail.

4.                   Excellent communication skills.

5.                   Familiar with literature relating to anthropology and
museums. 

6.                   Must be able to lift 40 pounds, must be comfortable on
ladders and elevated platforms.

7.                   PREFERRED: Ability to conduct anthropological library
research.
