Organization Description:  
The Chicago Academy of Sciences was founded in 1857 as Chicago's first science museum. Today the Academy's collection, due to its age and focus, is among the most important in the world. In 1999, the Academy opened the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Lincoln Park. It has welcomed more than 1,000,000 visitors and is a unique venue for the public, especially urban dwellers, to find new ways to reconnect with the natural world. The Museum provides award-winning exhibits and programs to 65,000 students annually and trains and provides resources for more than 2,000 Chicago teachers. The Nature Museum is one of the city's best examples of eco-friendly building technology, including a green roof, solar panels, natural light sources and native landscaping. The Academy and its Museum are engaged in important conservation and research work, such as its Butterfly Restoration Project.

Summary of Position:  
The Chicago Academy of Sciences, Notebaert Nature Museum seeks a motivated person to work full-time on a 3-year grant funded project as an Assistant Entomologist to conduct an inventory and databasing project of the institution’s historically important collections of natural history specimens and related ephemera in preparation for a major move. The Assistant Entomologist will be primarily responsible for the appropriate care and accurate documentation of the entomology collection. They will also assist the collections manager as needed and will oversee the work of volunteers and interns assisting in other parts of the project. The majority of work takes place at an off-site collections storage facility five miles from the museum. Other work may occur at another site near the museum.  

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
·	Care for and inventory the entomology collection.
·	Electronically document the entomology collection using the Specify database.
·	Prepare the entomology collection for safe movement to a new facility.
·	Work with the Collections Manager and curatorial staff to inventory all collections and update the electronic databases.
·	Oversee the work of volunteers and interns as they assist in the project.
·	Promote the collections to the public and the institution through tours and temporary exhibits.
·	Assist visiting researchers access the collections.

Qualifications:
·	Five years experience in the museum sciences.
·	Demonstrated skill in entomological techniques including specimen preparation and use.
·	Experience using databasing software.
·	Strong understanding and experience in collections housing and care requirements.
·	Ability to manage volunteers and interns.
·	Ability to work independently in an offsite location.
·	Ability to work within 32-inch aisles and lift 50 pounds.
·	Valid driver's license.
·	Preference will be given to individuals with experience in collections relocation, registration, archival research, and natural history.

Compensation:  $31,000 per year for the duration of the grant. This is a three-year term position.
