The City of Pacific Grove invites applications for the position of Museum
Manager.

*_TYPICAL TASKS:_*

*_ _*

Typical tasks may include writing policies, procedures, and handling routine
projects and programs. Duties may include, but are not limited to the
following:

· Assume management responsibility for Museum services and activities
including the development of all exhibitions, scientific research,
collections; recommend and administer policies and procedures.

· Manage the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies
and priorities for the Museum.

· Establish, within City policy, appropriate service and staffing levels;
monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery
methods and procedures; allocate resources accordingly.

· Direct the review, selection, identification, classification and
preservation of items in the museum's collection; oversee the planning and
installation of museum exhibits.

· Train, motivate and evaluate Museum personnel; coordinate staff training;
work with employees to correct deficiencies; recommend discipline and
termination procedures.

· Explain Museum programs, policies and activities; negotiate and resolve
sensitive and controversial issues.

· Represent the Museum to other city departments, elected officials and
outside agencies; coordinate Museum activities with those of other
departments and outside agencies and organizations.

· Provide staff assistance to the Deputy City Manager; participate on a
variety of boards, commissions and committees; prepare and present staff
reports and other necessary correspondence.

*_QUALIFICATIONS_*

Any combination of experience, education and/or training which substantially
demonstrates possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

*Knowledge of:*

· Operations, services and activities of a comprehensive natural history
museum.

· Archival care and cataloging of museum collections.

· Several scientific disciplines including natural science and systematic
biology.

· Principles and practices of program development and administration.

· Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluations.

· Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

*Ability to:*

· Plan, organize and coordinate the work of lower level staff.

· Supervise, train and evaluate staff.

· Speak to public groups.

· Lead the operations, services and activities of a comprehensive natural
history museum.

· Prepare clear, concise and persuasive administrative and financial
reports.

· Research, analyze and evaluate new service delivery methods and
techniques.

· Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those
contacted in the course of work.

· Observe safety principles and work in a safe manner.

· Work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

*_LICENSES_*

Possession of a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving
record.

*_COMPENSATION_**:* Total compensation consists of a monthly base salary
range from $4209 to $5116 on a five-step pay scale, with an additional
two-step longevity plan, as well as an additional 2% (of base salary)
Management Compensation, paid in lieu of management leave, overtime or
compensatory time. The Museum Manager receives the benefits afforded to the
members of the Pacific Grove Management Association.

*_MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION_*: The current status of the Museum of Natural
History is in transition, the Museum Manager may report to a non-profit
organization.

*_THE EXAMINATION PROCESS_**:* *Interested and qualified applicants* should
file an employment application at Pacific Grove City Hall. All completed
applications will be reviewed and qualified candidates will be invited to
participate in an assessment process to evaluate the training, experience,
and personal qualifications of the candidates. This process may include, but
is not limited to, written examinations, skills assessment testing, and oral
board interviews. Successful candidates may be placed on an eligibility
list.

*1. ENTRANCE TO EXAMINATION*: Anyone may file an application regardless of
race, sex, religious beliefs, national origin, ancestry, age, disability, or
any other legally protected status.

OPEN-COMPETITIVE EXAMINATIONS: You may file an application to take a
competitive examination if you possess the examination qualifications as
stated on the bulletin. Applicants must pass a physical examination,
including a pre-employment drug screen, and present proof of birth date
before starting work.

PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATIONS: Only City employees may apply for promotional
examinations. All regular full-time City employees may make application for
open-competitive examinations.

*2. APPLICATIONS*: An official application must be filed within the time
period stated on the bulletin. Late applications and facsimiles CANNOT be
accepted. Submit all applications to the Personnel Office at City Hall. A
separate and complete application must be filed for each examination.
Clearly show on the application form all training and experience. Candidates
are judged on the basis of the information presented on the application.
Resumés may also be submitted along with the official application form. All
employees must provide proof of US citizenship or authorization to work
under the 1986 Immigration and Reform Act.

NOTE: All statements made on your application will be subject to
investigation and verification. Results of character investigations or false
statement of material facts may be cause for disqualification, elimination
from the eligible list, or discharge from employment. New employees will be
photographed. For some positions background investigations may be conducted,
including criminal background.

*3. SELECTION*: Those applicants best qualified on the basis of information
submitted on the application will be selected as candidates for an
examination. You will be notified in advance of the time and place of the
examination. An eligible list may be established by ranking candidates by
their overall scores. The Personnel Office will make a recommendation from
among the top candidates on the eligible list to the City Manager, who will
make the appointment. All new employees are required to take a loyalty oath.

*4. EXAMINATIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*: Applicants must be in
satisfactory health and in a condition to perform the essential functions of
the position for which they apply. Candidates will be examined by a City
physician, at City expense, before appointment is effective. Examinations
shall consist of selection techniques which will test fairly the
qualifications of the candidates such as, but not necessarily limited to,
achievement, aptitude, and other written tests, personal interviews,
performance tests, physical agility examinations, evaluation of daily work
performance, work samples, medical examinations, pre-employment drug
screens, psychological examinations, fingerprinting and records check.
Individuals applying for positions requiring arduous physical labor will be
required to pass a back x-ray. Candidates are cautioned not to quit or give
notice to present employers until they qualify on the medical examination.

*7. SALARIES*: All stated salaries are based on present information, subject
to change. Appointments are usually made at the minimum salary. All salaries
are subject to payroll deductions required by law.

*8. EMERGENCY SERVICE*: All City employees are required to perform assigned
emergency service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.

*9. EXEMPT POSITIONS*: Employees hired into Exempt positions do not have,
and shall not acquire, any property or vested right to their position and
may be terminated at any time without cause, and without recourse.

*10. PROBATIONARY PERIOD*: Employees serve a probationary period of one
year. An employee may be terminated without cause and without recourse at
any time during the probationary period.

*11. BENEFITS FOR REGULAR FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES:*

· Ten days annual vacation - additional vacation after 5 years, increases
depending on classification.

· Sick Leave and Long Term Disability Insurance Programs.

· Membership in the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) for all
regular full-time employees and regular part-time employees working over
1,000 hours within a fiscal year.

· Thirteen/fourteen paid holidays per year, depending upon classification.

· Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance Plans (paid by employee).

· Basic Life Insurance and Accidental Death or Dismemberment Insurance.

· Partial Tuition Reimbursement for approved college-level courses.

· Deferred Compensation Plan.
