Hi Susie,

I see that no-one has yet replied to this. In the past I have used a
50% alcohol solution on a swab (moist only, not too wet with solution)
and only if the slides have beeen glazed but be careful that you don't
clean right up to the frame edge so that any fluid gets drawn under the
frame or it may damage the film. Seriously dirty slides I have
un-mounted, cleaned the film and then re-mounted in the frame. For
unglazed slides I regret to say that I just use a clean cloth and a puff
of breath and it brings them up nicely. There may be some 'product' in
the USA/Canada that performs even better.
I thought that I would leave this awhile in case some photo conservator
had a more professional suggestion.

Subject: [NHCOLL-L:4498] Cleaning Slides

Thanks in advance for your help with my question,

I have a general question about cleaning slides. We are currently
working on a digitization project, and have noticed that some of our
slides from the 1970s are dirty, resulting in a poor quality scan. I
have blown off all the dust possible with air. The color slides
themselves are in metal are stable (except for the dirt). Is there a
gentle solution that could be used, if necessary? Or can anyone suggest
an article that would be of assistance?

Thanks,

Susie
