Job Summary:
This position is located in the National Museum of Natural History, Department of Vertebrate Zoology, Division of Mammals.  Work will also be conducted at the Museum Support Center (MSC) and the Garber Facility, both located in Suitland, MD as the mammal collection is divided between these three locations.

Key Requirements:
·         Pass Pre-employment Background Investigation

·         May be required to serve an 18-month probationary period for supervisors 


Major Duties:
·         Participates in managing and maintaining the mammal collection.
·         Assures that collections for which he/she is responsible are properly prepared, catalogued, curated, and maintained according to established guidelines and procedures.
·         Trains and supervises museum technicians, volunteers and student interns as they perform basic collection management tasks. 
·         Participates in budget planning, purchasing and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
·         May have total responsibility for a discrete portion of the collection or may have a separate divisional function, such as loan monitoring, accessioning of incoming collections, or arranging researchers' visits to the collection.


Qualifications:
Experience:
One year of full-time experience related to the operation or 
management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects at 
the GS-07 that is close or similar to the work of this job.  The experience includes activities such as mammal collection management working in all of the following areas: registration, cataloging, loans, curation, as well as museum cataloging applications; and overseeing & training other employees, interns, and volunteers in a museum setting.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position 
will be considered to determine the total number of years and months 
of experience.  Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours 
worked each week.

Or Education: 
GS-9: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education 
leading to a master's or equivalent degree related to the position 
may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.

Or a Combination:
Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications; for example, a half year of experience and a half year of education in the field may be qualifying.

How You Will Be Evaluated:
Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above.  The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:
1.  Knowledge of museum collection management practices in one or more of the following areas: registration, cataloging, loans, curation.
2.  Knowledge of the general principles of mammalian systematics and classification. 
3.  Ability, demonstrated by experience, to supervise/oversee, and train other employees.
4.  Ability to collect and prepare mammal specimens in the field.
5.  Ability to use a variety of computer software applications and relational database programs to accurately and proficiently manage data.
