Dear All,
The Anton Paar DMA 35 meter is certainly a 'State of the Art' instrument
and has many other applications, I always recommend it on the fluid
preservation courses that I run. It's price tag can be hefty however (c. 1300 UKP)
and if you need something to use in the meantime, the alcohol hydrometers
are still available and can occasionally be found in eBay for not much.
Has anyone ever used the Mettler 'Toledo' meter in this context?

Hi Kirsten,
The one I use is the Anton Paar DMA 35 density meter. You can measure the
percentage of formalin through specific gravity or can change it to measure
% alcohol straight out.

I recommend it!
Email me if you need any more info from someone who's used it specifically
for fluid-preserved specimens.

Does anybody have any recommendations for alcohol meters? We need a
hydrometer and when I was a graduate student we used the old style glass bulb
contraption to measure the specific gravity of the fluid in our jars or
carboys to determine the percent alcohol content, but surely there's a much
better digital version folks are using today? I've seen a few online, but
thought I'd ask for advice from folks in the field.
Thanks,
Kirsten
