Dear Paul,

Maybe I can help a little, being a I'm at Texas Tech and all.

For the field notebook paper, you can have it custom made by any printshop. The paper stock was usually on 'Old Council Tree Bond, white, 24#' paper. A printer local to Lubbock (where PrinTech was located and a few ex-Printech employees now work) were willing to print the field paper for us and gave me a price quote in July (2010). As with most things, quantity makes it cheaper; they do not have it sitting around like PrinTech did. Contact me off-list if you'd like to follow up with my local printer; in theory they should have the specs from my last price quote. There's also the possibility of combining orders, etc. for a better price.

As for the skull tags, I do not have a supplier for a finished product exactly like what was used. We stopped using them at TTU in 2005 and switched over to pre-printing both a barcode and prep tag for assignment in the field and lab using a thermal printer, resin ink, and a polyester tag ( http://140.247.98.87/files/september2004.pdf )

However, the skull tags produced at TTU (in the last 10 or so years) were cut from Byron Weston "Resistall" paper. The one caveat here is that the paper is a little acidic so not truly 100% archival. However, the cotton fibers in the paper made it resistant against tearing in wet fluids. If you wanted to make them yourself, or buy small quantities of the paper to take and have cut by a print shop local to you, you can buy sheets of the Resistall paper from University Products.

Hopefully this helps a little.

Sincerely, Heath

Dear All

For years we purchased "skull tags" and loose leaf field catalog
paper from Printech at Texas Tech in Lubbock. I just called and they
are no longer in operation. Does any one have an alternative source
for these items?

Skull tags are of archival quality card stock that can be immersed in
fluid, they came on a card with 20 pre-punched tags per sheet. The
tags are round about .75 inch in diameter with a small punched hole
for stringing.
The field catalog paper is 100% cotton, printed with line and margin
and punched with 3 holes. Size is 9.5 x 6.25

Thanks, Paul
