Integration of the University of Memphis Collection of Mammals into the Collection of Mammals of the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History

The Collection of Mammals (MSUMZ) of the University of Memphis contained ca. 23,000 specimens collected over the past 50 years. The collection grew under the care of Dr. Michael L. Kennedy, who is professor of biology at the University of Memphis, and represents nearly 40 years of his life’s work. Dr. Kennedy became Assistant Professor at the UM in 1976 and has trained more than 50 doctoral and masters students and mentored a large number of undergraduate students using the collection. His training and mentoring of students, which continues today, was recognized in 1990 when he was awarded the Robert L. Packard Outstanding Educator Award from the Southwestern Association of Naturalists.
In August 2011, the MSUMZ collection was orphaned and specimens and associated documentation were transferred to the Collection of Mammals (OMNH) at the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History, Norman, OK. The SNM will provide strong institutional support and an optimum archival environment for the conservation and preservation of the collection. This project will safeguard the largest scientific collection of Tennessee mammals (ca. 75% of the estimated known scientific specimens for the state of Tennessee)—an important research resource and biological heritage. The collection will be integrated (cataloged, digitized, curated, and installed) over the next 3 years.
This project is made possible by a grant from the Improvements to Biological Research Collections Program of the National Science Foundation (DBI-1057439).
