AMERICORPS POSITION - SLATER MUSEUM NATURAL HISTORY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH ASSISTANT. . Location: University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, WA. Duration: Sept 1, 2012 - July 15, 2013.. Application Deadline: 15 August 2012, 5 pm PST.

The Slater Museum of Natural History provides a great resource for environmental/natural history education, research and inspiration in the Puget Sound region with our large collection of animals and plants. The volunteer will train local elementary school teachersin the use of natural history curricula (Nature in the Classroom - http://www.pugetsound.edu/academics/academic-resources/slater-museum/nature-in-the-classroom/ ). In addition we regularly provide tours of the museum to K-college groups and work with other environmental education programs (e.g. Tahoma Audubon, Nisqually NWR) for whom we provide specimens, workshops and expertise. The Assistant must have some knowledge of and passion for natural history, and will recruit volunteers, assist  local teachers and students, help develop educational materials and exhibits, and learn the fundamentals of museum stewardship.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps member will serve as Outreach and Education Assistant. The member's duties will include: publicizing and facilitating the use of the Nature in the Classroom curricula to teachers and schools, training teachers in the use of the curricula, coordinating and conducting behind the scenes tours of the Museum, recruiting and training volunteer Docents who assist with tours, teaching, and hosting guests during the museum's open hours. In addition, the AmeriCorps member will assist with the development of museum exhibits and additional curricula, and will learn museum techniques. They will keep track of purchases and mileage to and from sites, submit receipts and paperwork on time, organize, purchase and maintain kit supplies and assess and repair damage to kits. The position requires some natural history knowledge and passion to learn more.
