Subject: [RCAAM] Cleaning elephant tusks

Hello all helpful ones, we recently received a couple of elephant tusks
into the collection. One can easily notice accretions of various sorts
(including sticker residue) on the tusks. I have looked in many places
to see what the recommended method would be to remove some of these.
Some sites say never use water, one says water mixed at 50% with
denatured alcohol can be used and one even says water with mild
detergent can be used. Needless to say I'm confused and certainly don't
wish to do something that would be deleterious. If anyone out there has
had to remedy such and has suggestions I am all ears. Feel free to
contact me off list if you have any information that may be of use.
Thank you, Ron
