Earthquake in Northern Italy
21 May. Yesterday, Northern Italy was struck by a deadly earthquake that
caused loss of life and extensive damage to buildings, including
significant cultural heritage properties. In this difficult time, ICCROM would like
to express its condolences to the people of Emilia Romagna, who have
suffered as a result of this disaster. ICCROM is in contact with designated
Italian authorities and has offered its availability in assisting our Italian
colleagues and those institutions responsible for protecting cultural heritage
within the affected areas. This offer has been noted, and appropriate
means of collaboration will be evaluated once inspections of the monuments and
sites have been carried out and the situation thoroughly assessed.

Appeal for the protection of cultural heritage in Mali
15 May. ICCROM deeply regrets the recent incidents of destruction of
cultural heritage in Mali. We join the international community and the people
of Mali in their appeal for safeguarding this invaluable heritage, which
forms an important part of the common legacy of mankind. We therefore call on
all parties involved to exercise restraint and ensure the best possible
protection of the cultural heritage sites and collections so revered in Mali.
Should the need arise, by leveraging its professional network and partner
organizations in Africa, ICCROM will be willing to offer technical
assistance for recovering damaged heritage in close coordination with UNESCO.
