Associate Registrar, American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) seeks an Associate Registrar. As a key member of the AMNH Office of the Registrar, the Associate Registrar’s main responsibility is the coordination of loans to the AMNH traveling exhibitions program.  The position is integral in the development of procedures for ensuring that high standards are in place and enforced in the context of traveling loans.

The Associate Registrar position is responsible for:

  *   Creating and maintaining records
  *   Organizing domestic and international shipments [including arranging transport, facilitating customs, applying for import/export permits and immunity from seizure]
  *   Maintaining insurance records
  *   Reviewing facility reports
  *   Completing condition documentation (written and photographic)
  *   Supervising packers and shippers
  *   Creating exhibition budgets
  *   Supervising the transit, installation, and de-installation of traveling exhibition loans, involving a wide variety of materials (natural science specimens, anthropological artifacts, library collections, and fine art).

The Associate Registrar will be expected to travel domestically and internationally; approximately 25% of their time will be spent outside of the office, with individual trips ranging from a few days to several weeks.

The position maintains many critical partnerships outside the Office of the Registrar including:  curatorial and collections staff, conservators, exhibit designers and project managers, security personnel, packing and shipping vendors, and brokers.



Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills; sound written and oral skills, and a flexible personality.  Attention to detail, patience, adaptability, and strong organizational and problem-solving skills are critical.  He/she should have experience in records management; object handling; exhibition display and installation; conservation practices; legal issues; customs matters; fine art packing, crating, and shipping; traveling exhibition registration and loan practices; and museum insurance practices.  Candidates must have knowledge of museum policies and procedures according to AAM standards and must be familiar with various computer applications [Excel, File Maker Pro, Photoshop]; experience with KeEMu a plus.



At least three years experience with Museum collections handling, registration, and traveling exhibitions is required.  While formal training is preferable, experience is a key factor to performing this job.  The completion of at least a B.A. is required, although a degree in Museum Studies is highly recommended.
