BMSM INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE:  Collections Assistant Intern                    
AREA:  Collections Department                  
REPORTS TO:  Collections Manager		   
TIME REQUIREMENT: 8 to 32 hours per week for 4 to 12 weeks (flexible)
SALARY: Unpaid, possible stipend

OBJECTIVE: To enhance the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum’s collection of shells and preserved specimens, representing a large fraction of the global biodiversity of mollusks. The Museum houses a collection of worldwide and local mollusks that encompasses about 115,000 lots.  Records of these holdings are managed through a database management system and searches of the collection may be performed online.  Collection Assistants will help care for and promote education of the collection, by processing, cataloging, and making sure all specimens are housed appropriately, labeled, and organized.

EXPERIENCE: Candidates must possess excellent attention to detail, have a passion and respect for museums and scientific specimens, and enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds.  Candidates must be able to finish projects once started, be able to multitask, and work in a dynamic environment. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A.  Learn about the scientific classification process
B.  Assist with research and data collection of shells/fossils data collection
C.  Ensure shells/fossils are housed safely
D.  Assist with cataloguing and data entry of shells/fossils
E.  Create appropriate labels and organize lots accordingly
F.  Label all shells/fossils and any original labels with catalog number
H.  Assist with any other duties as assigned by the Collection Manager, Director, etc…
