Stonefish venom, as with most toxins, is protein based. The protein begins to decay the moment the fish dies but the toxic effects can be prolonged through freezing. At room temperature the venom can remain active for hours after death but once frozen can remain active indefinitely (depending on temperate). I would advise caution at all times :)

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] Stonefish

Hi;

Has anyone worked with Stonefish specimens? We have heard from a variety of sources that they are still quite dangerous after death. We have the opportunity to get one that is recently dead, and has been in a freezer. If anyone has any hints or advice, we would appreciate it. Thank you.
