Culture, Edmonton - The Royal Alberta Museum is committed to building and preserving collections documenting Alberta's biodiversity, landscapes, and human history.  We currently have an opportunity for a skilled Assistant Curator to support our Ornithology Program.

Reporting to the Curator of Ornithology, the successful candidate will act to increase knowledge of Alberta's natural heritage through preparation, analysis and preservation of materials related to birds. The position is responsible for the development and enhancement of the Ornithology Program's collections (study skins, skeletons, tissues, eggs, mounts, audio and video recordings), maintenance of the program's databases, and communication of information about birds to Albertans.

As the successful applicant, you will support and provide input to a program that communicates information about birds to diverse audiences through permanent and temporary exhibitions, publications, other forms of outreach, and one-on-one interaction with the public. Specific responsibilities will include:

-       Assisting with research initiatives to enhance knowledge and acquire new information on Alberta birds.
-       Undertaking fieldwork, and collecting, preparing and accessioning specimens,
-       Taking detailed measurements and recording pertinent information on collected material following standard ornithological practice, and subsequently carrying out various analyses (polymerase chain reaction, spectrophotometry, HPLC, TLC, gel electrophoresis, sound analysis) to characterize it.

In your role assisting the Curator, you will also be required to obtain and maintain necessary permits and file permit reports, train and supervise students and temporary employees in specimen preparation and curatorial methods, enter data into relevant databases, process specimen loans and exchanges and contribute to Royal Alberta Museum education and outreach programs.

The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to participate in museum redevelopment activities, including new gallery development and readying collections for moving.  The ideal applicant will be meticulous, have excellent organizational skills, and good laboratory and communication skills. He or she must also be able to work effectively in a team setting and a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.

Qualifications: A Master's degree in Biology or a related natural science from an accredited university and a minimum three years' museum-related experience are required. Equivalencies will be considered. Demonstrable knowledge of Alberta's avifauna and experience with ornithological curatorial techniques is essential. Experience with biochemical or molecular techniques would be an asset.

Salary Range:            CDN $2,428.11 - $3,188.38 bi-weekly ($63,373 - $83,216 annually).

Notes: Travel and fieldwork (often under difficult conditions) are required in this position. Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record.  Successful candidates will be required to undergo security screening.
