[Nhcoll-l] Specimen barcoding advice

Andy et al.,

I am not sure of the exact nature of the help that is needed, but I thought
I would mention a few things that might be interested to those that get
involved. There was a lot of work done on this topic at NEON during 2013
and 2014 and hopefully that information can be passed along.

A set of requirements were written and there was also an effort to identify
all the essential elements related to the preservation and receptacle types
for the sample/specimens in question, of which there are many. I don't know
if things have changed, but it was really a very unique and complicated
workflow involving fields sites, laboratories and museums with data being
generated and returned to NEON at each stage of the process. Sample were
also frequently split or subsampled at these external facilities.

There was also software written to enable field technicians to generate and
print 2D barcodes (with GUIDs) of various sizes to suite the specific needs
of the protocol. There were also quotes received from barcode vendors.

I know that there has been significant staff attrition at NEON, so I
thought this might be useful to whomever volunteers to help.

Best,
Michael
