[Nhcoll-l] SPNHC collection list

Please note that GBIF treats institutions primarily as data providers and secondarily as specimen repositories.  Information provided through the GBIF links that Brad kindly provided may lead you to the database specialist, not the collection manager.  Coverage is also limited to those institutions that (a) have digitized collections to the degree that merits uploading to GBIF and (b) have agreed to release their data online and to GBIF.

This is just to say that the GBIF listing of institutions and collections views them through a different lens than do registries of collections such at GRBio or Index Herbariorum.  These also contain records on many institutions that have not digitized and published specimen catalogs.

The botany world has long had its Index Herbariorum, now on line at the New
York Botanical Garden (www.nybg.org and go to Plant Science, then The
Herbarium, and to Web resources on the right & hit Index Herbariorum).  I'm
not sure about its inclusion of private herbaria.
