We keep Paryphantas in a mixture of ethanol and glycerine; pure ethanol will probably cause the periostracum to delaminate. The glycerine does not affect DNA, as far as I know.

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] cracking and disintegration of molluscan shells

Greetings,

It has been common to either oil or immerse (in glycerine) specimens that have thin shells and thick periostracums; for example, Paryphanta snails and unionids.

What is the best practice?

Regards,
Ron
