Scott,

(1) First you may want to look at the ASM's Animal Care and Use website.
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.mammalsociety.org_committees_animal-2Dcare-2Dand-2Duse&d=AwICAg&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=ptzuSTJqJXw467AEjT41ATSTjhIwTgqwzy1maiw_dok&s=OeYKeCx3KxxH6hHGUwgXyYij_FRxoCuwP980bc-fLY4&e= .

(2) Also: Sikes, R.S., W.L. Gannon, and the Animal Care and Use Committee of
the American Society of Mammalogists. 2011. Guidelines of the American
Society of Mammalogists for the use of wild animals in research. Journal of
Mammalogy 92(1):235-253.

(3) For overall program management policy: Smithsonian Institution (SI)
Safety Manual. 2015. Chapter 44 Zoonoses Control.
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.ofeo.si.edu_safety-5Fhealth_Safety-5Fmanual_safety-5Fmanual-5Ftoc.asp&d=AwICAg&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=ptzuSTJqJXw467AEjT41ATSTjhIwTgqwzy1maiw_dok&s=L32d_5kVu2X0rgJhpy3o2lBFZ-C69sgR7GG_Bq0loFA&e=

(4) I know that the NMNH Vertebrate Zoology Dept has great internal use
Health & Safety policies & practices (from field work thru transport to
handling/prep to biowaste disposal)...perhaps someone there could help you
out.

(5) Then there's a great report on Marine Mammal Zoonoses from UCDavis and
NOAA:
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__swfsc.noaa.gov_uploadedFiles_Divisions_PRD_Programs_Photogrammetry_Ma&d=AwICAg&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=ptzuSTJqJXw467AEjT41ATSTjhIwTgqwzy1maiw_dok&s=wYiibElTe4LOEeHP1-Kw7jhQMSVIJIqGRvf2XeNwEsY&e=

(6) Or: National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) Field Manual of Wildlife
Disease-General Field Procedures and Diseases of Birds. 1999.
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.nwhc.usgs.gov_publications_field-5Fmanual_&d=AwICAg&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=ptzuSTJqJXw467AEjT41ATSTjhIwTgqwzy1maiw_dok&s=cCqLIy5b_2x6uHEdOJH8jVQfi8sTRHf4UTSsLBfpxeQ&e=

(7) And don't forget what we in the public health business consider the
national guideline on biosafety: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC). 2009. Biosafety in Microbiological and Medical Laboratories (BMBL),
5th ed. (includes App A: Primary Containment for Biohazards: Selection,
Installation, and Use of Biosafety Cabinets).

Hello Nhcoll,

Folks, I am applying for an institutional biosafety protocol to work with
wild birds and mammals. I'm looking for relevant references and or
individuals that wouldn't mind sharing their own bio safety protocols. This
is for lab exercises in my undergraduate course (Natural History of
Vertebrates) in which I teach students how to prepare museum mammal and bird
skins. Thanks in advance for any help.
