Conservation Intern
American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) is seeking a part-time Conservation Intern for 9-12 months to assist the conservation team with duties related to an on-going, IMLS-funded research project investigating the conservation treatment of historic taxidermy.

The Conservation Intern will be trained in a variety of methods in order to assist the team accordingly. These will include: sample preparation, accelerated aging, instrumental analysis, (spectrophotometer, FTIR, etc.), maintenance of equipment, and interpretation of data.

The Intern will also assist in developing content for a conference workshop focused on general care and treatment of historic taxidermy. Work will include the conservation of taxidermy, development of PowerPoint presentations, development of web-based training modules, and investigations into historic and modern taxidermy treatment techniques.

Finally, the Intern will assist in dissemination of content through social media, such as blog posts and website updates.

An individual seeking to broaden her/his conservation experience by combining scientific research with hands-on treatment would be most appropriate for this position. Participation in the social media and dissemination components of the project will give the individual exposure and networking potential. The individual will also gain experience working as part of a large team in a multi-faceted institution.

The applicant should hold a B.A. or B.S. in a related field. At least 1-2 years of previous conservation experience in a lab setting is preferred. It is essential to have analytical and problem-solving skills, good end-use IT skills, organizational and time-management skills and to be an effective communicator and a strong team player. An understanding of the ethics and standards that guide the conservation profession is expected.

Applications must be received by June 30, 2015.
