The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, SD, Inc.
Summer Internship Program 2016

The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, SD, Inc. is now taking applications for
its 2016 summer internship program.

The Mammoth Site is a natural trap of late Pleistocene fauna. Over
10,000 vertebrate and invertebrate fossils have been uncovered at the
Mammoth Site from

its initial field season in 1974 to present. About 3,500 of these bones
belong to Columbian and Wooly mammoths, and more than 2,000 of these
bones are

preserved in-situ.

The bones of 29 other vertebrate species found at the site, as well as
specimens of 53 other invertebrate and botanical species, are stored in
our well-

equipped preparation laboratory and bone repository.

Position: Seasonal internships are available, starting in May and ending
in August or September (to fit your academic schedule). These are full-time

positions (40 hrs/wk) paying $9.00 per hour, with free housing. You
will be working between 400 and 640 hours over the course of the summer
(10-16 weeks;

this will include some weekends). The Mammoth Site is looking to fill
seven to nine of these positions.

Responsibilities: The position will involve conducting interpretive
tours and educational classes for the general public (a combined 20
hours per week),

museum conservation techniques in Pleistocene fossil material in both
lab and in-situ settings (12 hours combined between lab and in-situ),
and field

techniques and cartography of the in-situ bonebed (8 bonebed hours per
week).

Minimum Qualifications:
• Availability to start work on or prior to May 16, 2016 and continue
through August 19, 2016.
• Undergraduate in the following (or related) majors:
anthropology/archeology, biology, geology, or museum studies.
• Introductory level experience (3-12 months) with public speaking,
teaching, and/or work with children.
• Familiarity with computers, digital cameras, and database programs.
• Good organizational skills.
• Solid interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently
or as part of a team.
• Previous experience in customer service.
• Attention to detail.
• Ability to lift 25-35 lbs repeatedly.*

*You must be able to lift 25-35 lbs.* This is paramount to your work
here at the Mammoth Site; the primary educational responsibility of a
Mammoth Site

intern is leading Junior & Advanced Paleontologist classes. These
classes involve repetitive lifting of buckets full of sediment.

*International Students – You must be in your second year at a US
academic institution or have US citizenship or previously established
work visa to be

considered.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced experience (>1 year) with public speaking and guide/docent
work.
• Experience in education program development and delivery.
• A working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel and
Microsoft Access, and ArcGIS software.
• One year or more of vertebrate paleontology preparation,
invertebrate preparation and/or museum curatorial experience in
Pleistocene vertebrate

paleontology.

Housing: Housing is provided to interns as part of compensation on
Mammoth Site property. Housing is donated residential housing within the
town of Hot

Springs, SD. The Mammoth Site is also within town limits. Laundry
facilities are available on site. Hot Springs is a town of approximately
3,700 people with

several nearby state and national parks for recreational activities. Two
grocery stores are available within approximately 1.5 miles of the site.

Application: Visit the Mammoth Site website (www.mammothsite.org) or
contact Justin Wilkins (see below) for your application. You will
receive a Mammoth Site

application and 2 academic reference forms. Submit these materials (the
Mammoth Site application and 2 completed academic reference forms) along
