Hello All,

Thank you all for the responses to Kaleigh's post, this has been extremely
helpful.  I just wanted to add to Kaleigh's post with a little more
background.

Our institution is a small natural history center in Worcester, MA and we
are rapidly approaching our 200th anniversary.  For the past roughly 50
years our focus has been on New England ecology, but we still have many
holdovers from our early collecting years.  Some of which, like the Persian
Fallow Deer, are well outside our collections scope.  Our Collections
Committee has voted to deaccession this piece so we can focus our resources
on better preserving local specimens.

We have had this piece posted and have been contacting leads on the AAM
registrar's listserve for over a month with no interest or leads.  After
this experience we will definitely be posting any additional taxidermy to
this listserve as well.  It seems like there may not have been as much
overlap between the two listserves as we had originally anticipated.

We are still trying to identify a possible transfer for this piece, and we
are also looking for a new home for a full Kodiak Bear mount, see attached
image.  If anyone has a lead on institutions which may be interested in
these mounts, or the unmounted skins hooves, etc... from these specimens
please let us know.  We are desperately attempting to find them a new home,
and would like to reserve hazmat or auction as our last resort options.

We've put in a call at our local Fish & Wildlife office and reached out to a
few of the other institutions you all have suggested. We're happy to report
that sending the mount to auction is no longer Plan B; we now have
identified more options of homes in museums (which has always been our first
choice).

I'm inclined to agree with Mary Beth. Conserving and repairing this mount
and using it (via exhibits, at the museum and online) to teach about
endangered species would be a valuable opportunity to serve the public. The
best view to take of historic taxidermy collections is that they are utterly
irreplaceable.

Actually, I think it is a very nice mount showing the deer eating some

That is our first approach, but I've had no luck so far. We're just looking
into Plan B. 
I originally posted to the Registrar's List Serve but received no responses.
I've attached a photo of the mount if anyone here is interested. Here are
the details:
Object Name:  Deer Mount
Object Number:  2015.INV.0561
Condition:  Good
Description: 47"(h) x 54"(w) x 8"(d).  Half mount of a Persian Fallow Deer. 
Needs to be displayed flat against the wall.
Research: No donation record.  
Reason for Deaccession: poor positioning of taxidermy (tongue sticking out),
won't be used for programs or exhibitions
Our museum's biggest audience is families with young children. Our
collection, while historic, primarily serves exhibitions and programming at
the Museum; research is not a top priority for us at this time.

I agree with Link.  There certainly are many museums with research missions
that would accept this as a gift or permanent loan.

Have you offered it to any museums? Deconstructed, the antlers+attached
frontals, hooves, patches of hide, etc. would all yield valuable scientific
information to current and future researchers, especially if there are
associated data. Selling specimens sends a message...
