[Nhcoll-l] borosilicate glass

Hello Heidi,

stoelzle oberglass has a branch in North America if I am not completely
wrong. They produce high quality ground stopper jars, but available
sizes are limited and designed to hold larger specimens instead of small.

There are different qualities of soda-lime glass; for example, most
glass containers used in chemical laboratories are soda-lime and inert,
because of a special coating of the glass surface. This glass quality is
called "neutral glass" sometimes (e.g. used for pharmaceutical jars
which are also available as clear glass).

Uncoated soda-lime glass has the problem that dissolving ions create a
highly reactive (basic) surface which could harm specimens. But this is
rather an issue of specimen size in relation to contact surface, e.g.
dozens of small insects sitting in a small soda-lime tube have a large
contact surface, while a big trout in a large soda-lime jar has a
comparatively small contact surface.

In terms of long term stability, ground-stopper borosilicate jars are
surely more durable than borosilicate twist-off jars; the lid of the
latter will likely fail before the glass starts to corrode.

Regarding DNA-storage in small glass tube, I have no personal
experience, but would definitely choose a certified high quality tube.
Problem here again is the lid; I have tested some PE-tubes with
different lids (inner thread /outer thread, silicon caulking or not,
etc.) and many failed. As far as I know, there are no studies on the
effects of softeners (plastic tubes) or ions (glass tubes) leaching and
(negatively) affecting DNA quality.

Hope this helps,
Dirk
