Hi Karen,

If the shells
 or snails are not too fragile or valuable, put them in an ultrasonic 
bath. After that they are clean. Maybe the surface looks dulled after 
that. 
If you rub them quite thinly with petroleum jelly, they get a nice shine and look like freshly captured.
