Happy Friday all,

I recently received a request from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regarding artifacts that contain eagle feathers. Each year we submit an inventory to USFWS of eagle specimens in the Natural History Department as well as ethnographic artifacts in the Anthropology Department that contain eagle feathers. This year, USFWS requested that we provide documentation that the artifacts containing eagle feathers were in possession of Native Americans prior to the enactment of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act (1940). I am at a loss as to why we need to prove this. The USFWS is also bringing NAGPRA into the mix. For those with Anthropology collections, have you received a similar request?

Thanks for your input!
