Hello Everyone,

I'm looking for a current definition of 'gamma taxonomy', especially as it pertains to the role of natural history collections in documenting ecological and evolutionary research. From what I understand, gamma taxonomy is concerned with ranks below the species level including subspecies, variety, forma and populations. From 'A Dictionary of Ecology, Evolution and Systematics, 2nd Edition', by Lincoln, Boxhall and Clark:

Alpha taxonomy:
Descriptive taxonomy; that aspect of taxonomy concerned with the description and designation of species, typically on the basis of morphological characters.

Beta taxonomony:
The arrangement of species into hierarchical systems of higher categories or taxa; macrotaxonomy.

Gamma taxonomy:
That aspect of taxonomy concerned with intraspecific populations and with phylogenetic trends.

Does gamma taxonomy also include investigations of the ecological and evolutionary 'processes' that give rise to variation at this level?
If so, do vouchers that document investigations of ecological and evolutionary process belong in natural history collections?
What is the best way to select vouchers if the goal is to capture the breadth and depth of a research project for future generations.

Thanks,

Erica
