*Symbiotia Webinar Series*: 3rd Friday of every month at 3-4pm EST from 
January – June 2016

Project Managers from several NSF TCNs (MiCC, SERNEC, LBCC, SCAN, and 
MaCC) will present a series of six webinars focused on understanding all 
aspects of Symbiotic software and how this web-based collections 
management tool is used in various plant, fungus and animal portals. 
  Each 30-45 minute webinar will focus on a different topic including: 
1) a general overview of collections management features, 2) record 
creation, 3) transcription, 4) georeferencing, 5) crowdsourcing, and 6) 
a topic chosen by the webinar series participants.

1. Collection Management Features – Elizabeth Lippoldt (MiCC) *January 
15, 2016 from 3-4pm EST*
An overview of collection management features used in Symbiota portals 
including creating accounts and assigning permissions, entering skeletal 
records, searching via the Occurrence Editor, monitoring statistics, 
duplicate cleaning, and downloading data.
2. Record Creation – Michael Denslow (SERNEC) *February 19, 2016** from 
3-4pm EST*
An overview of methods used in Symbiota portals for creating skeletal 
(Stage 1) records and transcribed (Stage 2) occurrence records.
3. Transcription – Julianne Smith (LBCC) *March 18, 2016** from 3-4pm EST*
A walkthrough of the full occurrence record form used in Symbiota 
portals including defining terms, navigating the image display, and the 
general protocol for transcribing Stage 1 records into Stage 2 records 
with the assistance of OCR and NLP.
4. Georeferencing – Anne Barber (SCAN) *April 15, 2016** from 3-4pm EST*
A walkthrough of the process of batch-georeferencing specimens in 
Symbiota portals using Geolocate and Google Maps as well as the sharing 
of tips and tricks.
5. Crowdsourcing – Mari Roberts (MaCC) *May 20, 2016** from 3-4pm EST*
An overview of the Symbiota crowdsourcing features for establishing, 
performing, and reviewing crowdsourced data from both the volunteer and 
portal manager perspectives.
6. Webinar Request *June 17, 2016** from 3-4pm EST*
A webinar focused on the most popular request(s) from the webinar 
participants and the Symbiota Working Group members.
