A Special Announcement from NSC Alliance

In response to significant objections from the scientific community, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has quietly "reinstated" the Collections in Support of Biological Research (CSBR) program.

NSF's recent announcement notes that the program will be re-established next year as a biennial competition. The program has been offered annually. It is not clear yet whether the move to a biennial competition would reduce the amount of funding available for collections.

In March 2016, NSF announced that the CSBR program was being placed on "hiatus" pending a programmatic review. Most in the scientific community were puzzled about why a program would be suspended for a routine programmatic review. The NSC Alliance organized and sent a letter with SPNHC and AIBS to NSF, as did individual museums and professional societies.

NSF is currently conducting an evaluation of "smaller" programs, including CSBR, within the Division of Biological Infrastructure. An internal working group is expected to complete the review by November 2016. An external evaluation of DBI's research resource programs will subsequently be performed.

According to NSF: "the biological collections and research communities have provided very helpful feedback on the CSBR program, and this input will be analyzed and used to assess program needs."
