[Nhcoll-l] Vial jar system for easier specimen collection maintenance

... oh, how sad, Rob, the left horizontal tube in the jar second jar
from the right above the label just attracted my attention ...

Sure, this is one of the big disadvantages, and surely this system
doesn't work for highly or medium frequented collections. The system
does work to some extend in the entomology, but has the same
disadvantages if single specimens (e.g. for barcoding) need to be accessed.

Another disadvantage surly is that you can create a micro-environment
that might cause issues to the specimens (e.g. pH shifts if too many
tiny insects release too much fatty acids into a small amount of
alcohol, which is the case in those small glass vials).

If this system is used, borosilicate tubes should be a must, as
soda-lime glass tubes usually have a highly reactive surface layer.
Also, tubes should rather be locked with cotton (as originally
described), instead of being sealed tight (and thus limits any exchange
with the enclosed micro-environment).

The system still has some advantages especially in insect collections
that receive many bulk samples, because individualising these lots would
consume considerable space - so there is always a trade of.

But I think Alexandra perfectly summarised what would be the minimum you
should do if you would like to apply this system. You should surely not
go beyond this, because this would add considerable conversational risk.

Perfect summary on one shot, thanks for this Rob (& greetings) !!

Dirk
