Research Scientist
Chicago Academy of Sciences / Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.

The Chicago Academy of Sciences is seeking a mid-career research
scientist, Ph.D. strongly preferred, to develop a conservation biology
program at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago. The candidate
will have the opportunity to engage in research that supports the
conservation of imperiled species or ecosystems in Northeastern
Illinois, or that advances knowledge of urban ecosystems. Research
interests that incorporate citizen science are especially welcome. The
scientist will be responsible for providing content expertise for the
development of museum exhibits, serving as a representative of their
research to the print, broadcast, and online media, and speaking on a
range of topics to diverse audiences. We are seeking an individual with
a proven publication record, a history of successfully funding their
work, a good working knowledge of the ecosystems of the Chicago region,
and a clear vision for the future of their conservation research.

Key Responsibilities

*         Conduct original research on select aspects of conservation of
the biota of Northeastern Illinois.

*         Manage long-term research projects with regular deliverables.

*         Work closely with Chief Curator to design, implement and
deliver research projects.

*         Seek funding from a variety of sources to support research.

*         Be an active presence in the conservation and ecological
restoration communities.

*         Present research findings through publication and
presentation, including peer-reviewed journals, books, and proceedings
of professional meetings.

*         Serve as content expert for the development of museum
exhibits.

Qualifications

*         Doctoral Degree in relevant field or equivalent experience.

*         Highly motivated, with demonstrated success working as a team
member in a fast-paced interdisciplinary environment.

*         Ability to thrive in both independent and in a team-oriented
settings.

*         Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

*         Ability to communicate findings with a diverse array of
technical and non-technical audiences.

*         Experience in a museum or nature center environment desirable.

*         Passion for field of inquiry, be it nature, science,
sustainability, or urban ecology, is essential.
