Notice of Employment Opportunity

The New Jersey State Museum, located in Trenton, NJ, seeks one part-time collections technician for a one-year, grant-funded project to review, correct and enter collections records in the Museum's collections management database (EMu/Axiell) beginning Monday, December 5.

Under the supervision of the Natural History Registrar, this technician will work with its accession files and specimens to analyze and repair existing electronic records using a standardized protocol for data entry, assist in refining that protocol, and provide recommendations for populating the database with the current backlog of collection records as part of a phased database revitalization project.

Successful applicants will have one (1) year of experience, including data entry and record-building with a relational database (preferably EMu), as well as a Master's degree from or current enrollment in an accredited college or university graduate program in Museum Studies or a related discipline. Additional experience with one of the following Natural History disciplines is strongly preferred: geology, paleontology, ichthyology, herpetology, or general zoology.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate the following knowledge/abilities:

  * Knowledge of the resources used in a museum serving individuals of varying interests
  * Knowledge of the proper methods of handling scientific, historic and cultural artifacts
  * Knowledge of the scholarly methods used to identify, catalog and inventory museum artifacts
  * Ability to prepare accurate and complete catalog files
  * Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter and resume to Jenny Martin-Wicoff, Fine Art Registrar, at jenny.martin at sos.nj.gov<mailto:jenny.martin at sos.nj.gov> by 4 pm (EDT) Sunday, October 30.
