Hi:

There are some intriguing looking wide-mouth, glass carboys with lids and carrying straps here: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.beveragefactory.com_draftbeer_home-2Dbrew_SD-2D7340J-2Dglass-2Djar.html&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=E9s5_QrqD8RQiVzx_U4N8TU8zJtp3v7rI0Mre-Ihh_Q&s=--N4g1Gy03wycHyKiNBCqkRyUaILSoG37CSUsfimoGo&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.beveragefactory.com_draftbeer_home-2Dbrew_SD-2D7340J-2Dglass-2Djar.html&d=CwMFaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=PFB811-TJe3Qw30-B0XWp2JbSP5hCkOXaoCOmLjr1rU&s=lymEhrGY3knb3-YUNXP0aSwqdCvU0SEVWRn-KPJ9_NA&e=> The openings are about 5 1/4" inside and 5 1/2" outside. The opening is sized close to the mouths of the 2, 3 and 5 gallon glass pails many of us purchased in the past. The glass pails take the 132-400 finish lids.

A few years ago, I saw this gallon jar (largest shown in this set) or one very similar to it for sale (now apparently discontinued) at a local store - https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.walmart.com_ip_Anchor-2DHocking-2DCracker-2DJar-2Dwith-2DLid_16520333-23Item-2BDescription&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=E9s5_QrqD8RQiVzx_U4N8TU8zJtp3v7rI0Mre-Ihh_Q&s=RLOKbfnUL5RHlrRFznpXCUK3inuEgBE19-yFzgjvnyc&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.walmart.com_ip_Anchor-2DHocking-2DCracker-2DJar-2Dwith-2DLid_16520333-23Item-2BDescription&d=CwMFaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=PFB811-TJe3Qw30-B0XWp2JbSP5hCkOXaoCOmLjr1rU&s=xnwhljGgAYbM1-Do0P1ju956w4lnoJ70IZWWs5pkwlE&e=> The same set appears to be shown on the Anchor Hocking site - https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.anchorhocking.com_prodd-5F5623-5Fcat-5F260-5Fcracker-5Fjar-5Fset.html&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=E9s5_QrqD8RQiVzx_U4N8TU8zJtp3v7rI0Mre-Ihh_Q&s=3GdRJuvnBZKQEw-LsBL-3vyDg0zF_b8ERSF8L9wQB8w&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.anchorhocking.com_prodd-5F5623-5Fcat-5F260-5Fcracker-5Fjar-5Fset.html&d=CwMFaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=PFB811-TJe3Qw30-B0XWp2JbSP5hCkOXaoCOmLjr1rU&s=xkc5tTAgZ7dyRdvvHLLw7_EN8cfmGE0xfVnfIT_LSNo&e=> At that time, the jar had a 120mm opening. It was not as tall at the original, stock 120 mm gallon jars that we purchased before they were discontinued in glass. The AH jar was squarish with rounded corners and seemed like a good size for coiled snakes, turtles, wide-bodied fish as well as multiples of smaller specimens. The jar had an embossed but tasteful design on the exterior. We don't use this type of jar in our collection but have a couple of examples we received with gift collections. It seems like this might be one of the few glass gallon jars left with an 120mm. opening.

Sincerely,

Alan

I have tried that. I contacted O’Berk Kols containers and they got in touch with their suppliers. Unfortunately we are such small fish in the glass jar world that even if a large number of our museums got together and purchased, it still wouldn’t be worth them resurrecting the mold. This was some time ago but if there is enough interest I am happy to try again to see if anything has changed.

Hello,

This does seem to come up regularly. It is somewhat of a niche market but seems like it should be big enough for at least one company to offer an acceptable option that would satisfy most needs. If everyone got together and had a big enough order would one of the supply companies due a limited run? It’s not something I use at my current institution but have in the past.

Good luck. This topic has come up many times over the years and no one has been able to find a vendor that still fabricates or sells jars larger than gallons. Two alternatives that folks have been using are stainless steel tanks or polycarbonate storage pails from University Products - https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.universityproducts.com_polycarbonate-2Dstorage-2Dpails-2Dfor-2Dwet-2Dcollections.html&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=E9s5_QrqD8RQiVzx_U4N8TU8zJtp3v7rI0Mre-Ihh_Q&s=kxYB-Kz2d2cLa0lSrcYHpgpHBT9LtZ5BwOGURTSoh-s&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.universityproducts.com_polycarbonate-2Dstorage-2Dpails-2Dfor-2Dwet-2Dcollections.html&d=CwMGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=We781OrX8AX_uRGlBnDlQQC__BZZZDnMeZBhIPIwDtA&s=Lj9HSbupDEg7TJQ8CYj8syYpaoRLi53lMahHv5WHPS0&e=>. They do not seal very well but I know some folks who are using them.

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] LARGE museum jars

Hi folks.

I am looking for large, museum quality, glass storage jars; preferably with Polyethylene lined caps and (wishful thinking on this part)… straight sides.

I am interested in jars 128 oz or greater up to 512 oz.

Can anyone help?

Thanks
Jay
