John, Paul, et al: Apparently the filming of Wonderstruck was completed this summer, with some impressive folks involved. Should be interesting to see its release.

In the book, the 1927 cabinet of curiosities is part of an exhibit about the history of museums.
"Wonderstruck" is very interesting. It was written for young people and tells two alternating stories, one in text and one in graphics, that converge at the end of the book. It is well worth reading, both for what it says about museums in our society, and what it says about deaf culture. Although it is 460 pages long, you can read it in about an hour. It is a very good book to use to get kids talking about museums, dioramas, and so forth.

Hi

My name is Lisa Scoppa, I work with the art department on the new Todd Haynes movie "Wonderstruck", shooting this spring in NYC. One of the main sets of our film is going to be a massive Cabinet of Curiosities exhibit (the exhibit is fictionally set in the Museum of Natural History in 1927) and we are searching for elements to dress into our set. We are looking for all sorts of things: bones, fossils, artifacts, taxidermy, and all sorts of oddities. We are trying to source (and rent or buy) these materials from either a small museum or a private collector, so I thought I would reach out to you and see if you might have any ideas or suggestions...

The setting is a fictional exhibit about Cabinets of Curiosities in 1927. We have a very large room that we want to fill with specimens, artifacts, etc. Because of the nature of the exhibit, we don't have to be too scientifically accurate, and we are looking for a wide variety of things. Some examples:
Collections of minerals
Fossiles and bones
Taxidermy
Artifacts from other cultures
Entomology collections
Medical collections
Collections of antiques and oddities

We would be happy to make donations and to otherwise compensate for the loans. Let me know what you think!

Thank you
