Assistant Collections Manager, Invertebrate Paleontology

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHMLA) seeks an Assistant Collections Manager (ACM) in Invertebrate Paleontology for one year of an NSF-awarded Collections in Support of Biological Research grant focused on the Cretaceous of the Eastern Pacific. NHMLA, the largest natural history museum in the western United States, has recently finished a dramatic transformation including new ground-breaking exhibitions and a 3-acre wildlife garden. The Museum's mission is to inspire wonder, discovery, and responsibility for our natural and cultural worlds. Our strategic intent, "To be the best at communicating how our planet and life on it changes over time and why this matters" guides our priorities for the next decade.

NHMLA's Eastern Pacific Cretaceous invertebrate collection is among the largest and finest in the United States and is richest in molluscs. Curation and digitization of these collections affords a huge potential for a broad array of research and public programs.

The successful candidate will have a B.S. or M.S. in biology, geology, paleontology, or a related discipline, experience working with natural history collections, competence using museum database software, and knowledge of fossil invertebrates. The ACM will be responsible for supervising and training part-time interns, volunteers, and work-study students, implementing an efficient curation work flow (specimen curation, data entry, photography, georeferencing, and species verification), participating in outreach events, and presenting progress reports to the Invertebrate Paleontology Collections Manager. The ACM will work primarily with collections at the NHMLA's off-site invertebrate paleontology facility in Carson, CA.

This is a full-time position with a salary commensurate with experience, plus excellent benefits.

Application deadline is November 10th, 2017. The position will be available as early as December 15th, 2017. Applicants should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the full contact information of at least three professional references to Tyler Hayden (thayden at nhm.org), Invertebrate Paleontology Assistant Collections Manager Search, Research & Collections, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, 900 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90007, USA.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Please, no phone calls, no fax.
