Some natural sciences collections are reaching out to juveniles in detention along with individuals recently released from detention and including them in the process of digitization and transcription of museum specimen data. These are unique efforts to expand participation and include a broader and more diverse audience.

On February 16, 2018 at 1 pm ET we will have four panelists share their experiences developing and implementing programs that included incarcerated and recently released youth. Our conversation will delve into how these projects are conceived and look into what it takes to make them work.

The speakers will also share participant feedback, data outcomes, and lessons learned. Bring your questions and curiosity to find out more about potentially adding this audience to your community outreach plans.

Speakers:

  * Jennifer Zaspel: Curator and Head of Zoology, Director Puelicher Butterfly Wing, Milwaukee Public Museum
  * Lori Harshbarger: Logansport Youth Correctional Facility's Superintendent
  * Barbara Theirs: Vice President and Patricia K. Holmgren Director, William and Lynda Steere Herbarium, President-Elect, SPNHC, Editor, Index Herbariorum, The New York Botanical Garden
  * Nicole Gunter: Collections Manager of Invertebrate Zoology, Cleveland Museum of Natural History
