(in German: we are thinking about Nutzungsbedingungen vs. Gastforschervertrag) researchers have to sign before they are allowed to work in your collections. Are there guidelines for this? We are currently asking visitors to sign a form that states: * Personal details of the visitor * Time frame of visit * Usage of equipment: visitor has to stick to health and safety measures and be careful with all equipment; our institution has to train user in usage of equipment * Insurance policy and liability * Termination of visit I was thinking of adding: * Publications: we are to receive copies of all publications and data recorded in our collections (including photos etc.) * Citation: our collection should be cited and the object ID stated * Methods: the methods used should be stated (imaging, measuring, invasive sampling) As to the process of collection this information: do you confirm a visit to the collections and have visitors sign such an agreement upon arrival? Do you collect the data and required signatures in the context of applications for collection visits?? Any input would be much appreciated. If you are displaying the shell, it might be better to dress the scutes with something like glycerol or mineral oil once you have glued them back. Wipe or brush it on, wait a few days, then polish the surface. That will also keep the scutes flexible, prevent cracking and show their color well. You'll have to renew it every few years, but that's easy. Elmer's glue (PVA) is not a good idea; it gives off acetic acid when fresh, and won't grip chitin for long. Though one might hesitate to recommend it, hot glue (from a glue gun) sticks well, has considerable bridging and filling qualities and is less chemically disruptive because its tackiness is the result of heat, not solvents. The scutes are keratin not chitin. Chitin is chemically similar, but it is the exoskeletons of insects. The scales, feathers, fur, horn and hoof of mammals, birds, and reptiles are keratin. Oil will indeed colour saturate the keratin, and in some ways is good for it, but also attracts dirt over time and can cause things to darken and blacken over the long term (decades), with a hardened layer of adhered dirt. Keratin is also easily scratched and the attracted dirt can increase this risk. Depending on the long view for the specimen, it may or may not be preferable to use this. The Paraloid B72 will also colour saturate the scutes to make them look brighter, but it will dry to a finish that does not attract dirt, and be somewhat protective against scratching. Keratin can be damaged by heat, so I would probably avoid the hot glue, although the exposure time is relatively short. These points are relatively minor, but this is the approach us Conservators take. I use Opresol (Watkins & Doncaster, UK), diluted to 10% with deionised water, shaken up and applied with a brush. The water evaporates quite quickly, leaving an even sheen on the surface and which feeds the keratin. Antique dealers in ?tortoise?shell used to use odour-free almond oil which also works well, even thought it?s a veg oil. > Valerie Tomlinson > > -----Original Message----- > From: Callomon,Paul > Sent: Tuesday, December 6, 2022 9:38 AM > To: Valerie Tomlinson ; Art Van Arsdale ; nhcoll-l at mailman.yale.edu > Subject: RE: [Nhcoll-l] [EXT] Sea turtle restoration > > Polyurethane varnish will yellow and fall off fairly quickly, I think, as the scutes are chitin. > > > Paul Callomon > Collection Manager, Malacology and General Invertebrates > > Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University > 1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia PA 19103-1195, USA prc44 at drexel.edu Tel 215-405-5096 - Fax 215-299-1170 > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Nhcoll-l On Behalf Of Valerie Tomlinson > Sent: Tuesday, December 6, 2022 9:25 AM > To: Art Van Arsdale ; nhcoll-l at mailman.yale.edu > Subject: Re: [Nhcoll-l] [EXT] Sea turtle restoration > > External. > > Hi Art, > First question is: are there any future scientific analyses that you don't want your treatment to interfere with? > Second question: what is the intended use of the specimen in question? > Once you've answered that question, then you can look at what treatments are possible within those bounds. > It might be a case of packing things carefully so that the pieces don't get disassociated. When that failed, he recommended that I contact the experts at the nhcoll. I am looking for someone that can appraise the value of all or part of the following data and samples collected during 32 consecutive years of study on three species of freshwater turtles on the University of Michigan E.S. George Reserve, near Hell in southeastern MI. 6,692 X-radiographs of gravid female (n) = Painted (3,848), Snapping (7126), Blanding?s (1076), and Sonoran Mud Turtles 1.100). ~ 2000 blood or tissue samples of marked individuals of all three species of E. S. George Reserve turtles for a genetic study of male reproductive success. ~ 300 shells of turtles found dead Data on initial captures of 10,500 individuals and close to 60,000 captures + recaptures of known and unknown ages). Data on 1571 active nests, the majority associated with a marked female, hatchlings from surviving nests were associated with a female by common nest numbers. So, we have a single catalog number in our database for a lot that may have anywhere from 1 to hundreds of specimens. You can see an example of this here for one of the specimens in my collection: https://ichthyology.specify.ku.edu/specify/bycatalog/KUI/22858/. In this example you will see that I have 80 ethanol specimens and 6 cleared and stained specimens all cataloged under the same catalog number ? 22858. If a specimens is reidentified from that lot I can re-catalog it as a separate number and change the counts accordingly. This also allows me to loan individual specimen(s) from a lot. What this does not allow me to do however, is store unique information about each individual specimen in a lot which is sometimes useful ? e.g. where a tissue has been taken from an individual or it has been imaged or CT scanned. The procedure we follow is fairly straightforward: so long as all specimens are the same taxon, there is only a single database record with a GUID for that vial/slide/pin, stating the number of specimens (the database has fields so, e.g., it can list 3 females, 5 males, and 2 larvae all in the same record). If there are multiple taxa *and they cannot be physically curated separately* - such as a predatory wasp pinned above a prey item fly - then what we do is create semi-duplicate records using the same GUID, for which there is no other workaround. While having records UCRC_ENT_388451a and UCRC_ENT_388451b is pretty much a violation of the principle of a GUID, it's unavoidable in some cases. Mercifully, out of over 550,000 records in our database, there have been only ~150 semi-duplicate sets like this so far, mostly vials that can eventually be split and given separate GUIDs, and around 30 slides/pins that can't. We abandoned this practice in favor of individual vials or jars for each lot (like Andy's fishes, mollusks are cataloged as lots, not specimens). The reasons were: * The failure of a single lid doomed all the lots in the jar * There was some evidence that exudates from one lot (such as mitrid snails, which can give off dark, tissue-staining fluids for months after pickling) were contaminating the whole jar * Retrieving individual lots (for a loan, for example) was a messy business The original justification for keeping multiple lots in a jar was to save space, but we came up with a storage system that allowed individual containers in a smaller footprint. You can see it at: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/337950870_An_improved_design_for_the_storage_of_fluid-preserved_specimens_in_small_to_medium-sized_containers A smaller number of larger jars wastes more space than the opposite; think about the "spandrel space" between four jars on a shelf. We abandoned this practice in favor of individual vials or jars for each lot (like Andy?s fishes, mollusks are cataloged as lots, not specimens). The reasons were: - The failure of a single lid doomed all the lots in the jar - There was some evidence that exudates from one lot (such as mitrid snails, which can give off dark, tissue-staining fluids for months after pickling) were contaminating the whole jar - Retrieving individual lots (for a loan, for example) was a messy business The original justification for keeping multiple lots in a jar was to save space, but we came up with a storage system that allowed individual containers in a smaller footprint. You can see it at: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/337950870_An_improved_design_for_the_storage_of_fluid-preserved_specimens_in_small_to_medium-sized_containers A smaller number of larger jars wastes more space than the opposite; think about the ?spandrel space? between four jars on a shelf. We currently (this year and next year) work on eliminating a backlog of about 130.000 jars. Specimens can be on ethanol, formalin, glycerol, Steedman's fluid etc. To help us distinguish between different fluids, without having to open the jar, we have been trying out a handheld raman spectrometer for two weeks. It meets our expectations: it is fast (10 seconds per measurement), you can make your own library with fluids, it is easy to use, it identifies the fluid in 87% of the jars (the remaining 13% inconclusive might be due to contaminated fluids with fat, dirt or colourants from the specimen). The downside is of course the price: 33K euros (ex VAT). Though we can get a discount, it is still a lot of money. So my question to you is: who has experience with the use of a raman spectrometer in fluid collections? Do you use it often, and for what? Does it meet expectations, is it useful for other purposes in the collection? The results are amazing. Fast and reliable information about the main composition of the fluid is gathered without opening jars. This is not just time saving, but also much less of risk for the collection staff and the specimens. So I deeply encourage you to make all the effort in getting this device, since you would be setting a big milestone as an institution. Besides, Raman-Spectroscopy is not only helpful in detecting preservation fluids, but all kind of materials. So you can argue that the use of the device is not only focused for the fluid collection, but all kind of different collections, like dry specimens that may contain harmful substances, as arsenic or heavy metals. Sophie Cersoy from the MNHN in Paris has good experience using stationary Raman-Spectrometers, you may have read her Paper on the topic in the Collection Forum from 2020. So get in touch with her as well. I can give you my own results too if you are interested, just write to me on a private thread. I so envious that you maybe can get on of these devices!! hahaha. Assuming that you don?t want a wire armature in the tail that might prick questing fingers, I would suggest that you use paraloid B-72 adhesive but first you will need to treat the skin areas on both surfaces with some paraloid at 5 to 10% concentration so that it forms a consolidating layer in the skin, then apply the normal adhesive. The Loan Arranger Flies Again!* ?Twas the night before Christmas; though I?m not one to shirk, It was the first time since Covid I?d been back to work. I?d Zoomed and I?d phoned, both somewhat precarious, But now I was weary of meetings vicarious. The masks were now hung by the chimney with care, As was hand sanitizer and more viral ware. It was festive outside (or so I assume; In collections, no window can brighten the room.) The museum was aglow with bright lights and wassail, And some creature was stirring the drink with a fossil. Wassailed up, the curators were feeling no pain, Singing odd carols, till they wassailed again. (We let them do this; it?s all much deserved, And, post-mortem, they?ll come to us all pre-preserved.) But I, lacking nightcap, was sitting alone, Hoping against hope for the Return of the Loan. Our precious, our pride, had been out of our hands For decades, away in strange misty lands. No letters were answered. All dunning?undone. Our loan was alone, somewhere under the sun. When, out on the steps, there arose such a racket That I sprang up at once, wassail now on my jacket. Away to the door (still no windows) I flew, Ripped open the deadbolt, and tripped on my shoe. With wondering eyes I peered into the gloam: Could this be the return of our overdue loan? Then, a little old man, not so lively and quick, Got out of a Lyft?could this be St. Nick? Where was the sleigh, with the bells all a-jingle? And the traditional trappings of dear old Kris Kringle? He trudged to the door, with a large bag in hand. Somehow I sensed this was not what he?d planned. His eyes had no twinkle, in fact, they looked bleary. ?Delivery,? he muttered, in a voice sad and dreary. ?I no longer have reindeer,? he said, ?nor the elves; During Covid they all went to work for themselves. Now it?s just me, and I?m working alone, Trying to return all these overdue loans.? I took the box that he offered, and invited him in, Then called the curators to bring wassail and gin. They soon had St. Entropy feeling quite merry, And his nose was beginning to glow like a cherry. I opened the box, quickly checking inside: Our loan was returned after one wild ride. It had been to the tropics, it had been to the poles, It had been up with the eagles and down with the moles. More stamps than a passport were all over the sheet, But our wayward loan was intact and complete. I could read the fine print by the Saint?s glowing nose, As I signed it, a huge sigh of relief then arose. The curators and Santa were now all best of friends, But he had much to do. Nowhere near his night?s end. The Lyft was long gone. What was next? What to do? So they went to exhibits and grabbed a canoe. It was large, it was old, and it had not been moved Since Prohibition had last been approved. With white gloves, they lifted it onto the floor And guided the Saint and the boat to the door. They signed a new loan form to last just one night, Then loaded the Saint and slid him into the night. Curators piled in on all sides with their oars, And I threw in his bag as I shut all the doors. This should not have worked, but the curators rowed And the whole group shot upward, with all of their load. And, as the canoe soared up and over the town, A lone page, the loan form, drifted silently down. As they rowed and they rose, I heard a faint cheer: ?Wassails in the sunset, and Happy New Year!? (Sally Shelton and John Simmons believe in leaving well enough a loan.) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The application link is at the end. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply. The Cornell University Museum of Vertebrates (CUMV) is part of Cornell's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB), where this position falls within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The CUMV is a dynamic institution co-located with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in the Johnson Center for Biodiversity. The CUMV manages four renowned vertebrate collections (Ichthyology, Herpetology, Ornithology, and Mammalogy) that are used for research, teaching, and outreach by museum staff, Cornell students and faculty, and external collaborators. With 1.5M total specimens, the CUMV collections are a unique and irreplaceable record of vertebrate biodiversity over space and time. The CUMV's collections of 1.3M fishes make the Ichthyology holdings a particular nexus of long-term scholarly value and continued active research and collections growth. The CUMV is also central to Cornell?s ?whole specimen? endeavor that links traditional specimens with cutting-edge digital specimen information (e.g., CT-scans of morphology and physiology; DNA data and genomics; locational data on distributions; sound and video recordings of behavior; etc.). The CUMV seeks a full-time Collections Manager to assist with the day-to-day activities of accessioning, cataloging, loaning, labeling, shelving and caring for physical specimens. This role is integral to the management, organization, growth, and scientific use of Cornell?s collections by providing essential collections management support to the entire CUMV, with a particular emphasis on curating and growing the fish collections, data infrastructure (currently managed with the relational database platform Specify), and management of permits and specimen loans. Other duties include recruiting and supervising student workers, and providing tours and orientation sessions for Cornell classes and similar stakeholder constituencies. The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology is committed to fostering a healthy workplace that values diverse perspectives and backgrounds as well as supporting growth and advancement opportunities; our community welcome staff who are still learning in their careers and who are motivated to take on new challenges. Required Qualifications: Bachelor?s degree in a relevant field and a minimum of 2 years experience. Comprehensive working knowledge of global fish taxonomic diversity. Familiarity with overall vertebrate biodiversity. Experience working with Specify or similar relational databases in the context of natural history collection management. Organized, self-starting, eager to learn and adapt collections management skills, and very strong attention to detail. Willingness to learn and follow safety protocols and procedures to ensure compliance in the museum. Familiarity with various modern computer software programs, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Preferred Qualifications: MS in ichthyology or a related field, or equivalent work experience. Experience with respectfully engaging undergraduates and supervising and supporting student workers. We haven't ordered it in a while, so you might have to call around, we got it from Apparel City in San Francisco. Here are details I sent to someone else some years ago, attached is a photo of the bottom of the spool: The thread is made by Coats American, but only available through distributors. I last got it from Apparel City, and due to the size of our order they had to look around to other distributors. But, that is not a problem if you only need one. Apparel City might have one, might not. Or, you can look up Coats American and contacting various distributors. I don't know how important all the jargon is, GL finish (that's the GLACE finish), the Tex 105, etc. But, these are the details on the tag on the bottom of the spool. Seems to work well, but they might ask you to be flexible on one or another factor. Can't help you with that. Coats American Distributor or Apparel City Sewing Machine Company in SF (1330 Howard Street San Francisco, CA 94103 (415) 621-6660). Special Order from number on bottom of spool. Still same mfr as of Spring 2011 Details are these: Intrinsic 16, white, GL finish, 6600 yards, Tex 105. Cost is $30 per spool, but is special order. Current spools also say Z TWIST, JCJF 574801, 6035 MTR, C1730, GLACE, and Admiral Plus. Many thanks, Kind regards Andrew From: Cindy Howells Sent: 15 December 2022 11:01 To: Cindy Howells Subject: Lost and Found etc Dear GCG members and subscribers, In order to pass on some light Christmas reading, I'd like to draw your attention to a few areas of our website that you might not have yet discovered. Firstly our Lost, Stolen and Strayed area. This is a continution of our incredibly popular, and useful, Lost and Found pages which featured in the newsletter and journal for many years. It was, and is, a way of advertising for the whereabouts of missing specimens or collections that might have been transferred across museums, or between curators or collectors over the years. Obviously these sorts of databases are only effective when they are known about and used, so we have populated our new 'Lost, Stolen and Strayed' page with all the previous entries from the last 48 years. Clicking on the links will take you into a pdf of the appropriate journal. I encourage all curators to have a look at the current list just in case something on there rings a bell, and also to create entries of your own if you have appropriate lost or found material. All the instructions can be found here: Welcome to Lost, Stolen, and Strayed - The Geological Curators' Group (geocurator.org) Secondly, we have a small database of label styles and handwriting which can be found here: Collector, Dealer and Institution labels - The Geological Curators' Group (geocurator.org) Again this should be a very valuable resource when researching old collections, so do please have a look through it. We'll really love it if you'd consider creating entries of your own when working through historical material. It would be fantastic to be able to add more of the brief collectors' biographies with samples of their handwriting and labels. We are always actively trying to enhance our website with more resources and features of interest, so do please get in touch if you have any useful content, ideas, suggestions or even offers of help! Our GCG community has always been a very friendly place, and we aim to support and help wherever we can. Please mention GCG to any of your colleagues or fellow geologists to whom it might be appropriate - our membership fees are very reasonable, and include access to all of our published journals as well as membership discounts for meetings. Remember we're not just for museum curators, but also aim to embrace the wider community of all those interested in geology collections, conservation, documentation, preparation, exhibitions, photography, geoconservation, history of geology, geotourism, volunteers, students, teachers and many, many more, both in the UK and around the world. Basically we are all interested in the care of geological specimens both in the museum and outside it! We wish you all a very happy Christmas, Cindy, on behalf of the GCG committee -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We have been using the same string to tie on our specimen tags for my entire career here (both field tags and catalog tags). This string was bought in bulk in Brazil in the mid 2000s and is finally running low. Our current administration has no contacts in South America nor any easy way to pay someone that could buy it for us. I am looking for an easily sourced alternative that is as similar as possible, and is definitely at least similar thickness, 100% cotton, and white (photo attached of box, label, and string). It survived the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake despite being about twenty kilometers from the epicenter and despite many buildings around it being wrecked, as I saw in the following days. The fish were fine, but the power was off for weeks so many of them died and got fed to the penguins and sealions (who presumably enjoyed the gourmet feast). Interesting, then, that a crack in a glass cylinder caused catastrophic failure when a building shaking almost a meter horizontally for several seconds didn?t break a flat sheet. The position is supported by a NSF Harnessing the Data Revolution Institute project entitled, Imageomics: A New Frontier of Biological Information Powered by Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning. This collaborative, multi-institution, multi-investigator project involves biologists and computer scientists who are training machine-learning algorithms to extract phenotypic trait data from images of a variety of types of biological specimens. The learning is aided by structured biological knowledge such as an anatomy ontology and phylogenetic trees. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to ongoing efforts to extract trait data from images of fish specimens at the under the mentorship of Henry L. Bart Jr, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and TUBRI Director, and Yasin Bak??, Senior Manager of Biodiversity Informatics and Data Engineering at TUBRI.
