I am very pleased to announce the official advertisement today of these new fellowships! Thanks to all of you who have helped with the specific program areas, and to the Office of Academic Appointments and Internships! Smithsonian Fellowships Focus on Climate Change and Environmental Justice Our planet faces unprecedented and interrelated crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and a global pandemic. Nationally, the United States is also confronting our complicated history and legacy of race and racism. As the largest museum, education, and research complex -- with 23 museums, numerous research centers, and the National Zoological Park -- the Smithsonian?s vast collections, exhibits, current and historical data sets, and in-house expertise provide a unique opportunity to inform interdisciplinary approaches and solutions to many of these challenges. Through a new initiative, Our Shared Future: Life on a Sustainable Planet, the Smithsonian aims to advance solutions that fill us with optimism for our planet and all species that call our planet home. As part of this initiative, the Smithsonian is launching two new fellowship programs: Smithsonian Climate Change Fellowship and Smithsonian Environmental Justice Fellowship. Each program will support a cohort of 2-5 fellows for a period of two years. Fellows will receive a stipend to conduct independent research that utilizes Smithsonian resources (e.g., data, facilities, expertise). Fellows with research projects that have the potential to produce rapid results and impact are especially encouraged to apply. Application deadline: August 31, 2022. Eligibility: Applicants for Postdoctoral Fellowships must have or will have received the Ph.D. by the time the fellowship begins. Applicants must propose to conduct research in-residence for a period of no less than 12 months and no more than 24 months. Preference given to applicants with start dates before March 1, 2023. Term: 24 months. Stipend: Candidates will receive a stipend of $62,000 per year for Postdoctoral Fellows. Stipends are prorated for periods of less than 24 months. A maximum research allowance up to $5,000 is available. Please help us spread the word. More information about the various research opportunities and eligibility guidelines can be found here: Our Shared Future: Life on a Sustainable Planet | Office of Academic Appointments and Internships (si.edu) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Even after our graduate RA spent hours over multiple weeks with Honeywell customer service and resolved none of our problems, our new IT guy sat down with our machine for 2 hours today and fixed nearly every issue!! If anyone wants advice on this machine, I can probably put you in touch with him directly (I myself was not involved in the process). Most were easy built-in settings, once he found the right menus on the machine (not in the program we use to print). See edits to my original text, below each in red. > > > 1. Connecting it to a device was harder than it should have been (our in-house IT could not do it without Honeywell customer service help). > 2. It prints very faintly. It doesn?t seem to recognize the media we already had (supposedly ?standard? and can fit any thermal printer). This results in us having to open and shut the print head before every label, just to trick it into recognizing there is media present. It also ejects/feeds about 4-5 labels worth of media after each label. > * While we may still not be using the preferred media, he got it to at least stop thinking it was ?out of media? by turning off the sensor that is at the front of the machine, just where the label pops out. > * The second half of this issue was fixed by changing the setting for the type of media. It now prints continuously with no issue. > 4. There is no built-in cutter to cut your labels for you (not sure if that is just a model issue or none of these Honeywell ones have it; the company seemed confused by this concept) > 5. MacLeod To: PaleoNet Cc: Micropal List ; Vrtpaleo List Sent: Sunday, July 17, 2022 at 10:36:12 AM EDT Subject: Paleonet: Recent UK news item on The Natural History Museum As a matter of general interest, and since no one else has, I?d like to draw the paleo. community?s attention to an article that appeared in a major UK newspaper this morning under the title ?Natural History Museum ?descending into irrelevance?, claims employee? (see https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/07/16/natural-history-museum-accused-institutional-vandalism-will/). Full disclosure: I am a former employee of The Natural History Museum and held senior science administrator posts in that institution from 1999 to 2016. The article refers to quite a long editorial by Fred Naggs who is a former employee and current Scientific Associate in the (former) NHM Zoology Department, which can be accessed here: https://www.mapress.com/mt/article/view/megataxa.7.1.2. Although Naggs couches his arguments largely in a conservation-biology context, their implications for systematics, taxonomy and, indeed, paleontology are equally clear. Institutions like the NHM have periodic issues with funding and, as some of the older members of this list may recall, I certainly bear the personal scars of difficult decisions I had to make while I was the NHM Keeper of Paleontology. But, setting that issue aside, Naggs addresses deeper issues concerning the philosophical direction of the NHM, its management, its oversight from trustees, it?s funding from the UK government and (tangentially) the perception of what natural history museums are for and the primary constituencies they serve, as well as their past, present and future. In these contexts, Naggs offers an account of long-term changes in the philosophical direction of the NHM ? set by the NHMs immediate past and present directors ? that accord with my own, personal experience of that institution at a senior managerial level. Naturally, these latter issues are pertinent for all research museums, not just the NHM. If you care about these institutions, and the place of paleontology in the environment they create, you might want to have a look at this controversy for (I think) it mirrors in microcosm some of the challenges aspects of our field face in macrocosm. How do collecting institutions preserve evidence of an ever-changing natural world? And how does a changing world and climate impact those preservation efforts? Conference topics will address actions, responsibilities, and outcomes in the care of collections through a holistic lens, including documentation of the natural environment now and in the future, and the role cultural organizations have to play in advancing sustainability efforts. CCAHA?s aim is to convene experts in the field of conservation, collections care, environmental science and more, to offer perspectives on the imminent impact of their work on preservation practice. CCAHA is seeking proposals from the community of sessions that highlight a project, initiative, or practice exemplifying the challenges and opportunities of documenting the natural world amidst a climate crisis. How has your institutional or professional approach to this work impacted the practice of preservation, conservation treatment, exhibit design, or documentation within a framework of sustainability? Presentation topics may include, but are not limited to: ? The importance of not depleting natural resources while caring for collections ? Measuring the impact of storage solutions on collections of the natural world ? Caring for documentation of the natural world in field notes, herbaria, maps, living matter, etc. CCAHA?s goal for this virtual event is to create a space where many diverse voices can share their perspectives and experiences related to these topics. The Senate has just passed (and the house is expected to pass as early as tomorrow) the so-called CHIPS plus bill ? see below for more details. The bill incorporates $81 Billion for NSF and specific language concerning Natural History Collections was maintained as follows: BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH COLLECTIONS. (a) IN GENERAL.?The Director shall continue to support databases, tools, methods, and other activities that secure and improve existing physical and digital biological research collections, improve the accessibility of collections and collection-related data for research and educational purposes, develop capacity for curation and collection management, and to transfer ownership of collections that are significant to the biological research community, including to museums and universities. (b) SPECIMEN MANAGEMENT PLAN.?In consultation with other relevant Federal research agencies, and as the Director determines is appropriate, the Director shall require that proposals submitted to the Foundation for funding for research that involves collecting or generating specimens include, as part of the data management plan under section 10344, a description of how the specimens and associated data will be accessioned into and maintained in an established biological collection. (c) ACTION CENTER FOR BIOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS.?In coordination with other relevant Federal research agencies, as appropriate, the Director shall make awards on a competitive basis to institutions of higher education or non-profit organizations (or consortia of such institutions or organizations) to facilitate coordination and data sharing among communities of practice for research, education, workforce training, evaluation, and business model development, including by establishing an Action Center for Biological Collections. This is directly related to the Extended Specimen report by BCoN and the Biological Collections report by the National Academy. BCoN currently has a proposal in to NSF for a Specimen Management Plan and associated workshop and also has a FAIR data proposal and RCN proposal in the works to continue this great work. Let?s hope we see some benefits accruing from this in the near future in the form of additional funding for these initiatives. The 64-33 vote on the bill, H.R. 4346, is the culmination of an effort that began early last year. After numerous fits and starts, lawmakers ultimately agreed to a package this month centered on $52 billion in direct spending aimed at bolstering domestic semiconductor manufacturing, along with more than $200 billion in research authorizations. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) were the the bill's main catalysts. Seventeen Republicans voted for the package. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) voted against it. The semiconductor provisions could prove important to solving supply chain bottlenecks affecting electric vehicles and solar components, among other energy and economywide implications, lawmakers said. "We don't know exactly what innovations will come out of this, but we do know this: America will be more competitive because of it,? Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Chair Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) said. ?And we do know this, that we will be able to grow our economy for the future because of the investments that we've made today." The legislation includes an authorization of $50 billion over five years for DOE's Office of Science, the first such reauthorization in the office's history. The National Science Foundation meanwhile would get $81 billion over five years, including $20 billion for a new technology directorate meant to spur technologies like quantum computing and artificial intelligence. Dubbed the ?CHIPS-plus? package, the provisions represent a slimmer version of what originally passed the House and Senate. Trade provisions, foreign policy tweaks and international climate spending were among the high-profile items dropped. Earlier this month, senators were looking for compromise between H.R. 4521, the "America COMPETES Act," and S. 1260, the ?U.S. Innovation and Competition Act." But negotiations were upended by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). McConnell ultimately voted for the bill today. Momentum for passing the bill accelerated earlier this month as Biden administration officials held briefings with lawmakers that laid out the national security implications of inaction. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told lawmakers they needed to act before they departed for their summer break. The House intends to take up the Senate-passed bill to beat that deadline. The Rules Committee was meeting today to consider how to shape floor debate for the legislation, a key stop before an impending chamber vote. According to a statement issued by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) following the vote, Democrats intend to pass the bill as soon as tomorrow. ?The House will proudly pass this essential legislation and send it to President Biden to be signed into law,? Pelosi said. Depending of the manufacturer it could be a costs of around 1-2 Euros for the gasket, which thinking about the time that is saved in topping-up preservation fluid or cleaning degraded rubber from the jars, is totally worth it. Here you have some nice examples of a charge of FKM Rings I got a few years back for the Ruhr Museum: As said you can choose whatever plastic you prefer, but i have never heard of a "buna-n" (or NBR) - Silicon compound. Actually i think its not really possible to mix those. My advice, use silicone for water-based preservation fluids (e.g. formaldehyde solutions) and NBR or even better EPDM for alcoholic solutions, as ethanol can evaporate through the silicone. The company that did the work here for me is called FRANKSA GmbH (https://www.franksa.de/) its a technical rubber manufacturer. I imagine that you can find someone similar in the US or other European countries. The plastics come in large rolls that are cutted in the desired size. If you have a super low budget, you can buy the plastic role directly and cut the ring yourself. It work perfectly, but is kind of time consuming. But for 10-30 Rings its actually better, since the companies start from 500 rings usually. The best supplier for rubber rolls in Germany I know of is Reichelt: https://www.rct-online.de/de/halbzeuge/platten/gummiplatten-gummimatten-gummistreifen I'm sure if you ask them, they can find suppliers in other countries as well. Hope this helps a bit, since its very nice since you can get all the sizes you want. You can even have different hardness of the rubber and if desired even choose a specific color. But if you can afford it try to go for the good old grounded stopper jar, in the end its a very useful investment and saves a lot headaches for future museum professionals. Most likely that the softer grades would be more user-friendly but the buna-n durometer is so far, long lasting and easy to apply to the lids with no slipping off. It work perfectly, but is kind of time consuming. But for 10-30 Rings its actually better, since the companies start from 500 rings usually.
