Thanks for clarifying/adding, Fabian!

Invalidenstrasse 38 is round the corner of the Museum für Naturkunde, maybe there are more (unpublished) data in the Archives of the MfN in Berlin

Dear Dirk,

The two first cited sources you shared just give information that Linnaea was part of the ornithological societies from 1880 on. They moved from Frankfurt to Berlin in 1885. Here is a source from the 16. Newsletter of the malacological society of Frankfurt from 1885 (can be found in BHL):

this source refers to Turmstr. 19 under the same year:

few more information in this work on Bufo material stored in St. Petersburg:

The Zoological Institute of St. Petersburg holds a
collection of amphibians and reptiles from Paraguay that
was bought at the “Linnaea” Institute in 1885. The “Na-
turhistorisches Institut Linnaea” was situated in Frank-
furt am Main and after 1885 in Berlin. This company
purchased animals from various collectors, identified
them and sold to the museums of London, Vienna, St.
Petersburg and others. This collection was obtained by
the “Linnaea” earlier from the naturalist H. Rodhe (Mer-
tens, 1967; Gans, 1971) and contains many specimens of
amphibians and reptiles described by Boettger in 1885.

there are some more hits on google scholar for the search term "Naturhistorisches Institut Linnaea"

With best wishes

Hi Leslie,

Linnaea Naturhistorisches Institut was a biological supply house based in Berlin since 1885, before they were based in Frankfurt, as written on the label. So the specimen has to be something collected before that. While i did some research on the subject, I did not find a specific date when the company was founded. They themselves claimed to be established since 1882, but I found some Letters from the company dated in 1880 in the archives of the MfN Berlin. So maybe they started in the 1870's.

Hope this helps at least a little bit. Even though Linnaea was one of the most prolific supply houses in Germany, there is very little know of its history.

Best wishes from the Ruhrarea,

This is a label from the Naturhistorisches Institut. From the mid-late 1800s. Could anyone suggest a reasonable locality? Thanks.
