.... just want to add that it might be worth considering to have a copy of the relevant IATA pages Andy forwarded with you when returning from the field carrying ethanol preserved specimens in your luggage to avoid any ambiguities when
checking in especially in third world countries. Airline / airport staff is often unfamiliar / not well training in the IATA regulations and/or the current issue of the IATA handbook might not be at hand.

Have also in mind that 3x heat-sealing is a must, i.e. you may need to carry a heat-sealing device with you into the field to be able to comply with the IATA A180 packing requirements.

Last but not least, have in mind that import of pure ethanol is prohibited to certain Islamic countries for religious reason; it worth considering to document that your tubes are filled with an ethanol based puffer that is spoiled with specific DNA-stabilising
chemicals ...
Congratulations, Andy !!!

Hi all

With the release of the latest version of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations recently it appears as if we have finally reached the end of our long dangerous goods journey. Attached is the new language inserted that allows specimens,
packaged according to IATA Special Provision A180, to be carried as carry-on and checked baggage as well as on your person. I have highlighted the relevant line I Table 2.3A and section 2.3.5.14. You will not that operators or pilots approval is NOT required
in all these cases.

You will however, presumably, be required to also follow TSA guidelines for carry-on baggage and specimens will thus have to be in a quart size zip-lock bag with no internal container more than 30ml (as per SP A180 even though TSA allows
100ml). Only one quart size zip-lock per passenger is allowed – in other words the size of the bag will limit how many specimens or tissues you will be able to carry on board. If in doubt, check it. In any case, I would suggest carrying a copy of these
regulations with you, together with all necessary permitting etc. when attempting to carry specimens onto a plane.

I would like to once again thank my contacts at IATA and DOT for their unending support and assistance during this process. I could not have done it without them.
