really common prior to the Civil War? I also wonder if
contemporaneous illustrations aren't considered as valid as
photographs? Again, no expertise claimed, and of course I realize
an illustrator could just as easily embellish or alter as much as
we can with photoshop today. Still, if that's the only visual
record we have, should it be disregarded? Is it that unreliable?<br>
