assuming that you have to rely on top-marking of tubes, this
surely offers no solution for your problem but might be a good
alternative worth mentioning in this context:<br>

If it is OK that labels are sitting on the tubes rather then on
the caps (with the disadvantage that you need to pull out tubes
out of racks to read the labels), sufficiently high quality paper
tags (e.g. used to mark slides in the old analogous days) with
desk jet printers using pigmented ink might offer a solution. Pro:
allows pre-configurated computer based printing of labels (capable
to include more information than just a tube ID), no time
consuming handwriting and readability issues, ID stays with the
tube rather than with the cap that might get interchanged. Con:
tubes need to be pulled out to read information, repeated handling
of tubes might damage labels, labels might fail below -25°C.<br>
<br>
Some tubes offer a variety of different cap inlays which allow
colour coding (e.g. for different collections under storage); some
inlays are PE and thus more stable than PVC inlays (which might
deteriorate faster)<br>

Another option is to look for specific solutions offered for
clinical biobanks and blood banks: for long-term storage e.g. for
huge cohort studies which need to keep samples for decades, and
those need to be properly marked. We received a offer from a
French supplier few years ago, but didn't order. The homepage only
offers information in French, but there are surely similar
companies (e.g. Thermo Fisher) which offer similar solutions. <br>

students or volunteers to label specimens. The article has a

ink pens but they smear, and
sharpie is slowly fading. I was
hoping for a suggestion on what to
use to write on them.
Alternatively does anyone have a
preferred small circle label for
vials that does work with archival
ink pens?<br>
