We looked at eggs collected in North America starting around 1880 through 1920 and found little mercury or arsenic, certainly not in concentrations that would have been used as a preservative. Old manuals for preserving eggs recommended using mercury and
arsenic, but in the collection of the Jurica-Suchy Nature Museum (Illinois) and the small sample from the Field Museum in Chicago that we investigated, we did not find such preservatives were used.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
