The Smithsonian is similarly blessed. Its
board includes all sorts of high-end names like the Chief
Justice of the United States and the Vice-president of the
United States, along with people like David Rubenstein,
co-founder of the Carlyle Group, the chief executive of Sony
Entertainment, the president of one of the largest real estate
companies in the DC area, Steve Case (founder of AOL). It
helps to have powerful and wealthy friends. The federal
appropriation is $819.5 million, which is about 2/3 of the
institutions' income. And then there are those gift shops and
the real source of SI's wealth - the cafeterias (home of the
$16 sandwiches and $4 cans of soda...).
